Is getting a AirBnB in La Jolla a wise idea as far as a 5 night base camp to see San Diego area. Do you think it is too far north of San Diego? The reason I ask is we found a really nice house in La Jolla by UCSD and seems to be perfect except it is 10 miles from the main Pacific/Mission beach hot spots.

We are not big "beach people" but will spend 1 day at beach, planning on a day at the Zoo, dinner at Gaslight area and then just wandering around So Cal.

Note - We will spend first two nights in a cabin close to Pine Valley before heading back to the coast.

Your thoughts?

La Jolla is not a bad drive back to San Diego, you can do everything you want from that base and that's a cool area
Try and avoid peak traffic times into and out of San Diego

There are better meals than Gaslight, try dinner at Little Italy
For beach day I would head to Coronado and access beach at Hotel Del Coronado, plus you can eat at restaurants without staying there
Zoo is a must and that Balboa Park area is nice
Head up to Cabrillo Monument for best views in San Diego and go down to tidepools

I originally was looking at Pacific /Mission Beach area but it seems since laying on the beach all day isn't our thing that from we can go both north, south much easier from La Jolla. Plus its a much better value than on the main beach and La Jolla seems like a pretty cool town in itself. Thanks.

ETA - The rental (part of a really nice house in a really nice neighborhood) is 2 blocks from the Scripps Coastal Reserve Biodiversity Trail.

I enjoyed la Jolla even though we only drove up one day from San Diego. I would not hesitate to stay there. It is certainly a wealthy area.

LaJolla as a base for seeing San Diego will work fine.

It is a very beautiful community.

Walk around downtown if you’re into art.

Torrey Pines State Preserve is just north of LaJolla, nice scenic hiking area there.

As was said earlier, pay attention to commuter peak times when going to/from downtown San Diego.

La Jolla isn't a terrible location, but it's slightly out of the way for what you want to do. As others have said, the drive is reasonable if you are avoiding peak driving times. Otherwise, that I-5 inbound-outbound traffic can be really bad.

Yeah we are relaxed people now so this will work fine as driving off hours for 20-30 minutes around the area won't be a problem.. Further, the rental is 2000 sq feet with a view of the Ocean so staying home will be part of this trip instead of running and gunning 24/7 to try to see everything.

Yes, houses in this neighborhood are nice.

Make sure you go to the cove where the seals lay out and sun. It is a really cool thing to see.

At Torrey Pines there is a parasail facility where you can tandem parasail along the coast. It’s an awesome experience.

La Jolla if my favorite part of San Diego, you will not be unhappy with the decision to stay there if you are looking to relax with day trips sprinkled in. Torrey Pines has some really nice hikes, you can grab lunch at the golf course. Downtown La Jolla has plenty of good restaurants, you have the seals, really good beaches, can't go wrong.

Ok I am here and ...what can I say. San Diego is just beautiful. Will have more later but the geography and climate is unreal. Do not want to go home to hot and humid!

I second this.

Last time I went I stayed in a hotel right on the boardwalk in PB. It was awesome being right on the beach and being able to walk up and down the boardwalk. Walk to all the different shops, bars, and restaurants nearby.

Snorkel with leopard sharks in La Jolla. Rent a shortie wet suit. Fantastic scenery. Kayak the caves. Home of Dr Zeuss and Mitt Romney.

Hey, that's where I live!

To the OP, I wouldn't spend too much time downtown. It can be a lot of fun and has some cool spots but it just a downtown area similar to other cities. San Diego has much more to offer, ride up the coast and just pull over and hang out when you see an area that you like.

Eat at Duke's and George's in La Jolla. Go to George's at sunset and wait for a table at the window on their top deck. Have fun

La Jolla is really nice. Not a bad place to stay at all. Has really good restaurants and the beach is nice there. You can rent kayaks and go to the caves.
It's really not that far into SD (as long as you don't travel during traffic times).
