Where to stay in San Diego

I'm planning one last trip for my family of three before baby No. 2 arrives in late October. We have never been to San Diego but believe 4-year-old son will love beach, zoo and sea world.
Where should we stay for earl August? Looking at 6 nights. Any recommended resorts on the beach? Would like to walk to the beach from condo/hotel...not drive... but will be renting a car to explore the area. Open to Airbnb if people think it provides more value.
Am I thinking about this all wrong and should stay downtown instead?
Do families even do beach days considering how cold the water is?
Again, We have never been.
Curious to know what the board thinks.

Pacific Beach area is awesome. I stayed at a hotel right on the boardwalk last year for my bday. Right on the beach with an ocean view from my balcony. Can easily walk up and down the boardwalk. Several restaurants on the boardwalk and nearby you can walk to from the hotel. There is a drugstore(that sells alcohol) and grocery store across the street from the street side of the hotel. Just a great area. Had a friend take her family(3 kids under 10) and they stayed at one of the other hotels nearby right on the beach and they loved the area as well.
10-15 minute drive to Sea World.
This is where I stayed...they had underground garage parking which was great.

Look at hotels near Ocean Beach in Point Loma. They aren't cheap, but you should be able to find some good ones within walking distance to the beach.

La Jolla. Here's a good option ($200-ish):
La Jolla Shores
Its in the cove next to La Jolla proper, so its not too busy. Its an older, clean, well appointed hotel. Its on the beach and you can walk to Scripps Acquarium, UCSD, etc.. The drive to the zoo and Sea World is easy (15 min Sea World, 20 min to zoo). Torrey Pines is a couple of miles away, Oceanside is the community next door.
I've gone there every year since 2009 post Christmas to New Years.
(edit) I just clicked on ther website and Fodors has them as the "12 Most Family-Friendly Hotels in San Diego", which I didn't know.
I've had good luck getting my room upgraded at no cost at check-in if they have availability.

Windnsea area. VRBO, Very close to La Jolla proper and Pacific Beach. Laid back beaches.

No by the beach is best.....especially with kids.
Downtown more suitable for adults traveling without kids.

I was there end of March last year and it was highs of mid 60s and you still had several families on the beach with their kids playing in the water. August will be fine.

Mission Beach/Pacific Beach.
As others have mentioned, Gaslamp is for adults looking for happy hours and nightlife.
Last time I was there was mid October and the beach was packed. August should be the same.
We stayed in Gaslamp so I can't recommend anything on the beach but one of the guys in our group had stayed at an Airbnb beachfront condo a few months prior and said it was great.
From my limited knowledge, Pacific Beach is slightly more party oriented than Mission Beach.
La Jolla is gonna be the nicest beach spot, I have only been there for food and drinks, can't comment on any properties.

Sorry I can't be a better help.
I do know it is like right next to Pacific Beach area though. I think my sister in law and her husband took my nephew there last time they were in San Diego for a beach day.

Considering it seems that you're looking for a relaxing get away, I'd stay away from the Pacific beach area. It's a young college aged crowd for the most part.
My number one choice would be Hotel Del Coronado but it's really expensive. I couldn't stay a week there but if you can, do it. You can't go wrong with staying in La Jolla or Carlsbad, both areas are nice and laid back for the most part. La Jolla is kind of like a Beverly Hills'ish place directly on the beach while Carlsbad is more quaint. Mission Beach is going to have more action but would be a nice place to get an air bnb right on the beach.
All in all you can't go wrong out here. The zoo and sea world are great but remember there is a legoland and the zoo safari park in Escondido are really nice as well, plus Disneyland isn't a bad drive if you want to bring the kiddo there.

In LaJolla the Pantai Inn. Odd name (it’s Thai, I think), wonderful place.
Hotel Del is the other option, expensive but kind of a bucket list thing.

Trip update:
Just learned the Zika Virus is still a thing. There are reported cases as recently as last year. No reason to risk it as we can plan this trip for a later date.
Looking at Yosemite National as a backup plan.

None of those cases were transmitted while IN San Diego.
Do you not see the word imported next to the total number?
CDC has big alerts on their website saying all recent cases of Zika in the U.S. are from those who traveled OUTSIDE the U.S. and got it there and then came back to the states.
Learn to read stats before you freak out on them.
ETA: CDC says there was a total of 72 Zika cases in the US in 2018. ALL 72 were cases where the person had traveled outside the US and gotten it and then come home.

Yeah I don’t want to be too harsh on him, but I don’t get cancelling the trip for this. We’re talking about 4 imported cases out of a city of nearly 2 million. San Diego doesn’t exactly have a booming mosquito population.

I understand the concern with Zika and pregnancy. I'm trying to get pregnant and if I do will avoid all the travel areas outside the US with Zika.
But the numbers show there is no worry in San Diego. It just shows that out of all people in San Diego...4 of them traveled (likely to Mexico) and got Zika there and then were diagnosed when they came back to the U.S.
Hell if he took that map seriously...he wouldn't travel to Texas or Utah or Florida or Arizona or New York or Alabama.

This is what's so great about Tigerdroppings. lsunurse grows the largest pair of balls known to man and tells someone he/she has never met to "learn to read." A statement lsunurse would never make to someone's face.
There is no reason to risk anything when I can take this trip whenever I want for the remainder of my life. I'll just fly somewhere else.
