Evaporator coil replacement cost?

AC in our master had been running warm so I had someone come our and take a look today. I was assuming we were low on freon. That was confirmed however it appears the leak may be coming from our evaporator coil. The outdoor units are 5 years old, but the indoor coil is original (97).
I got a rough quote on replacing the coil of ~2,800. From everything I can find that seems really high. I'm not sure if that was for just the coil or the whole central system. I know with that old a system it's best to just replace it.
I was at work when the ac guy came buy, so I only got to speak with him on the phone for a second.
Any thoughts?

If the outdoor evaporator was replace the inside could sound have been as well. At least I’d think they should have been.
I may be wrong on that.
That being said, my coils were leaking in two of mine last year and we replaced both with entire units.
It was a few thousand more for everything new as opposed to replacing just the coils.

you give no particulars, but that price sounds about $1000 too high. However, you are not likely going to get any basement prices this time of year, as those folks are getting busy as hell right now.

Sounds high to me as well. Paid about $1200-1300 a few years ago.

Like I said, I only spoke to him for a second, and most of what he said I am getting second hand from my wife.
I'm going to talk to the guy tomorrow, but I just wanted to check and make sure I wasn't way off thinking the quote was pretty high for just a coil replacement.

Had my AC guy replace one in my son's house a few months back. Was $1000.
But he always gives me a deal. I use him on my rentals and we go back a long ways...

Got quoted 2500$. Depends on what you are looking at 16 sear, 20 sear? Two stage?

its gotta be for the whole system. a coil by itself is only going to run $200-$400 at the most depending on application.
not sure what outdoor units they used 5 years ago for you but the cost of refilling an old system with the old R22 freon alone would be around $800-$1000 so i would think and hope any decent repair man would install the new freon units and not buy you R22 outdoor units. read the label on the side of your outdoor units and it says on there the freon type it uses.
a repair man with integrity will explain all of this to you and your options. with that said, you state the newest parts of your system are 5 years old so they should still be very usable for at least 5 more years unless they us R22, if they say R22 then they arent worth reusing.
i would suggest your best investment is to replace the indoor units along with all new ductwork because its just been in there way too long to not put in new ductwork. you wouldnt believe the level of dirt dust and yuck that builds up and stays in there even after duct cleaning services.
prices vary wildly with these guys to the tune of as much as $1k different from highest to lowest quotes so get 5 or 6 quotes if you can and go with larger name brands you know and avoid the "off brands" that save you money but dont have the same quality
