I always think it's weird how contract details come out. Why does the overall price get leaked first, and then the guaranteed money later?

That’s an agent leaking it to so everybody sees their client getting this huge amount

Some of you people are ridiculous. He's a pretty good running back that is easier to replace than others want to believe. He's also one failed test away from a year long suspension.

Exactly. Do you guys not think it’s odd that Ingram’s performance was disappointing to start his career, then all of a sudden he has two pro-bowl caliber season, then gets busted for PED’s?

I am pretty sure the Saint’s FO realizes that without PEDs Ingram is an average at best running back. They can’t afford to invest in a runningback who will be suspended for a whole year if/when he gets busted again.

I think it's a win-win. Saints sign a decent backup and save a bit of cap space while Ingram moves on to a place where he will likely be the lead back.

We must have preferred Murray

I doubt that.

or his initial asking price was too high

More likely his agent tried to float the 8 million per that was reported initially as the offer he got from the Ravens. Saints probably figure "Oh well".

I, for one, am sad to see him go.

My understanding from sources on how Mark Ingram wound up leaving New Orleans for just a few extra $$ per year: Ingram was seeking a lot more than three years, $15 million from the Saints and never gave any indication he'd sign for that amount. And Saints felt they had to move on so they didn't miss out on Latavius Murray too. Would they have paid that much to keep Ingram? Maybe, maybe not. But they never got a counter-offer in that ballpark. Meanwhile, the Saints' best offer was four years, $17 million with only $5 million guaranteed, per source. And Baltimore offered more guaranteed money, in addition to a possible bigger role in the offense. Would Ingram have stayed in New Orleans for the same offer? Again — maybe, maybe not, but the Saints never offered as much. ... It's a shame we'll never find out, but it's also possible this ends in a win-win for both sides.

Makes sense. With the cap and the way negotiations work, the Saints couldn't overpay for Ingram and/or let him dictate how they attacked FA at the position if he signed elsewhere.

At least we won't have to see him with the snow ball picture anymore!

Apparently the Ravens contract has over $2M more upfront in guaranteed money, which is a HUGE difference rather then what many here were suggesting ("only $500K more then us"). Ingram made a smart decision if that's indeed the case for someone possibly on their last contract of an NFL career

Former Saints’ RB Mark Ingram intends to sign a three-year, $15 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens, per @AdamSchefter and me.

and me. I don't know why but I think that's weird.

Saints offered 4/$17 but only $5mil guaranteed.

If this is the case, he did the smart thing in moving on at his age. Heck, he’ll probably be out of the league in 3-4 years anyway - regardless of where he went. Take the guaranteed $$ while you can - one twist to a knee and you lose everything.

I hate it - not happy with Murray - rarely any big producing games and has been injured quite a bit.

Either the saints FO screwed up or Ingrams agent. The reports yesterday was that he signed for 7.5 to 8 a year which was way too much...

As mentioned, it's as simple as his agent overestimating the market. Saints offered him a deal, didn't get a counter, and had to move on Murray quickly before another team could grab him.

Is Ingram better than Murray? Yes. Is it going to make a noticeable difference in the offense? Probably not. Is the team better off with the extra cap space? Absolutely.

ETA: The Saints signed a back with less wear, and for cheaper, to be the backup to Kamara.

You remember him right? The other starter on our team that Saban overlooked

Spotrac shows Ingram without any guarantees or an up-front signing bonus. He has to earn his monies from the Ravens.

He left because he wanted to win a Superbowl which will never happen here again.
