Yes, I am an idiot. Phone memory is full of pics I do not want to lose. Are they automatically backed up to the cloud somewhere? Or do they need to be 'transferred' somehow? I don't want to lose all these photos but I'm hoping I won't have to spend hours manually moving them to the cloud or some kind of backup file. Any tips or a good link (for idiots) would be greatly appreciated. I need it explained to me like I'm five...

If you have an iPhone go to settings and turn on iCloud Photo Storage. If you don't have enough cloud storage, I highly recommend adding to it. 2.99 for 200GB per month is a good starting point.

And no, if you go that route there's nothing manual needed to be done. As you take pics your camera roll is constantly loaded to the cloud (you can set it to only do this on wifi to not kill your data.) I can't recommend this enough to folks. I've had this on for years and have never lost anything. Every time I get a new phone, it's all there. Still logged by date and searchable by location.

Will do. Thanks.

One more question: In my past ignorance, I've been transferring older photo files to my laptop in one big folder, organized by date, etc. (in fear of losing them). They change format when going to a PC, and it seems like a process converting them back to Apple compatible photos. Is there a manual process I can use or do I need to use some kind of conversion program to get them back onto the cloud with the others?

You should be able to just dump them in. The location and time stamps will probably be lost though

Do you have Office 365? If so, OneDrive comes with 1 TB for free, and it can automatically upload photos and videos from your iPhone. Works in desktop browsers and Android devices, too.
