Shoulder Dislocation Rehab

Anyone here gone through a bad shoulder dislocation and had good success with physical therapy after to prevent it from happening again? I've heard from some people that my shoulder is never going to be 100% as good it was before the dislocation without surgery.

I had a really bad one about 10 years ago (I was 26 at the time). Popped down almost even with my nipple. Dr said it broke a little bone on my arm where my rotator cuff attached but that set back in place fine.
He made me wear a sling for fricking ever and I think that set me back months. The atrophy in my left arm was gross. Took me a solid 6 months to get full range of motion and almost a year before things were back to “normal”. I did PT at home myself and was religious about it. To this day I still have some soreness but it has yet to pop out again.
So no, your shoulder will never be the same again. But that’s part of getting older, some shite can’t be fixed and you learn to live with it.

My left shoulder used to pop out all the time when I was a kid. Idk I have ridiculous range of motion in my shoulders.

Happened to me last week for the first time and it was also really bad like you described, but I didn't fracture anything. (I'm 27 btw).
My doctor told me I didn't need the sling after only like 5 days and I'm just starting PT at home myself now at 7 days post reduction, which is really soon based on everything I've seen and read online (2-3 weeks in the sling for 20-30 year olds before starting PT).
I don't have much pain and my only concern is the outside portion of my entire upper arm is still slightly numb and weak. I'm not sure if outer upper arm numbness is normal this long after they put it back in. I'm hoping this goes away eventually

Weakness is normal for a while. That’s why you are doing PT. Numbness should improve over time as any nerve that was traumatized heals. Just monitor and let doc know if no improvement. How well it will do is generally person and injury specific and will depend a lot on how strong you can get it. Don’t ignore the exercises.

This. That shite will break you if you let it. Stay disciplined and KNOW that your hard work will lead to to full use of that shoulder and arm again. Also the stronger you are going forward will lead to fewer dislocations in the future.

After finishing PT, my shoulder was still hurting whenever I tried reintroducing lifting weights. Swimming laps really helped to reduce the pain and build up strength in that early period. Something worth considering
