IM threads and references to IM'ing

This site doesn't have an IM function, so are all the IM references just a big inside joke? I know admins can send out warning via IM, but it doesn't seem like anyone else can. Is there some function on this site I've been missing out on for 8 years?

People love to bitch about being premium but it's like $6 a month which isn't much compared to how much time I spend on the site

2006 and older accounts were grandfathered in to free premium.

There is no premium feature and only Admins have access to private messages.
