How safe are ‘other’ mesh WiFi systems?

My router is years old, and I’m in a new house where there are too many walls between the only cable modem point and other devices. Should be a good time to try it out. I like that TP Link one but I also like the mesh force, I just wonder if it’s safe to use if it’s a Chinese company.

Quit tripping over dollars to pick up pennies. You want a wifi-mesh system? Buy a reputable one. They arent that much more expensive.

Thanks for all the comments. I’m a newbie, but I do understand what you all mean about spending more for something well-known. I don’t need a lot of advanced settings, so something closer to the Google Wi-Fi price range is better than some $500 rig. My only hesitation with google was what you mentioned, their notorious targeting with snooping, ads and data collection but I’m guessing they have all that info on me anyway

Google WiFi is absolutely worth the cost of you are getting mesh. It’s a super easy setup, and it’s fast and never loses connection. I’m really happy with mine

I use Ubiquiti for my WiFi mesh system. It's easy to set up, the range is spectacular and the app (all controlled by your phone) is intuitive and well-laid out.

I think scam is probably the wrong word, but you should consider the business model. Anything that needs to be regularly updated, like security patches on a router, or requires accessing it's own cloud services to function, ie to set up the device you have to create a "other.com" login, needs to come from a company that you think will exist 5 years from now. We've seen plenty of devices end up becoming bricks after they went out of business or even after becoming hot enough that someone else bought them and later shelved them.

I would be leery of any of these routers not backed by a major company. Orbi is Netgear, Linksys has a Mesh system, you mentioned Google. Eero was one of the first in this area so maybe they are safe but I'm not sure I'd make a $300 bet on it.
