The thing with 7 y/o's is they dont always listen to their friends. And I agree it's not an issue for your own kids who are raised around guns. The curious friend is what I worry about. People make mistakes with guns all the time unfortunately even adults. Loaded guns should be kept in a nightstand vault or something similar.

Todays generation is just not the same, I would guess close to a majority of kids have little to no exposure to guns, and even the ones that do, don't have exposure to them nearly everyday, the days of kids grabbing the 410 or 22 to hunt after school or before school are gone for the most part. It's a sad reality I agree, but I just dont trust the majority of younger kids that come to visit to have the knowledge and respect for guns as generations past.

Dad had a glass gun case that my grandfather (his Father in law) had made for him. It had a chain with a pad lock on it.

My bother and I knew exactly how to "jimmy" the chain off the eye bolt that held it.

But dad didn't care because, for the most part, we were responsible.

FWIW, he still has that guncase, but he keeps his flyrods in it. All of his guns are in a proper safe.

Which takes me to my next item. We don't have a safe in our house. We don't own that many firearms, so the need really isn't there. They're all long guns (but the wife has been in the market for a CCW.) As I mentioned before, the previous owners of our house had a "small" wall safe installed. That's where I keep all our ammunition and keys to the few long guns we have (all locked). One that had been holding my wife back on her CCW was a place to keep it. When I told her, "The shield is small enough to fit in the safe." she said, "Oh, well that changes everything."

Edit: And I'd like to add, thanks to everyone for a rational discussion. It really is helpful to think about all of the issues, both ones I've thought of before and new ones as well.
