Why do they do this? They were waiting for something to happen. All this was is a strong rain storm. When I was growing up back in the 80s there was no coverage unless there was a hurricane coming and Nash was on and he and his chalkboard was right.

Probably because nothing much else was going on, and they need something to talk about between ads.

Oh, and nb4 the pussification of millenial America.

Edit: I'm leaving it up.

You were watching, so I guess they were giving their audience what they wanted to see.

Because there was serious potential for tornadoes and damage from the storm. They'd rather chicken little and nothing happen than underreport and people die because they didn't know a serious storm was rolling through.

They have discovered weather reporting is cheap to produce and broadcast plus it's apolitical and appeals to a broader audience. It's all about $$

I sometimes find humor in the local talking heads trying to find something to talk about when they are on the air for several hours. Margaret Orr is the worst about that. Has to be constantly flapping her lips for eight hours straight.

A little bit of everything in this thread. It's certainly about viewership and driving those numbers by sensationalizing the event. But it's also become progressively more evident that probably the biggest factor to saving lives during these events is lead-time. So the more people you have glued to these events, the more people will say "shite, there's a tornado coming" and seek shelter.

I'm a weather nerd so I could watch that shite all day personally.

Well for your information a-hole, my neighborhood got sideswiped by the tornado that did touch down in the Seigan area. We were without power for the weekend. A tree took out power lines 100 feet high.

Seeing as multiple tornadoes were spotted within miles of the girlfriend back home while I was in a cloth tent in Pleasant Hill among my fair share of rain and wind (she stayed because the weather was SUPPOSED to be worse where I was), I was happy to be informed of the progress of the storm.

The National Weather Service has some of the best meteorologists in the country working at the Storm Prediction Center. They, for days, talked about the potential for a serious situation. As it was, there were a significant number of tornadoes in this system. For us, we were lucky enough that most of them stayed north of I-10.

The SPC was dead on accurate with the amount of energy in this storm. In our area, that led to high rain rates and not so much tornadoes. In other areas, this storm was different. As it was, we got more rain than was predicted.

Sure, the media has a lot of shiny new toys they like to play around with in weather events, and that leads to some hyping. But this wasn't 2 guys standing around in a sprinkle. This was a day of heavy rain with a system that had a history of tornadic activity.

I will never understand those who bash the weather media here. If you don't want to watch it, turn the tv off.
