Hunting/Outdoor Books?
Posted by mylsuhat on 3/1/18 at 10:46 am30
This may be better suited for the Outdoor Board but I figured I'd give it a shot here.
What are some of your favorite Hunting/Outdoor related books? What ones do you recommend and what ones are you interested in?
I have read and think these are must reads:
A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold
Meat Eater by Steve Rinella
American Buffalo by Steve Rinella
Turkey Hunting: A One Man Game by Ken Morgan
If you like the Primos' and turkey hunting then The Truth About Turkey Hunting by Cuz Strickland is a must
I want to read:
American Serengeti: The Last Big Animals of the Great Plains
by Dan Flores
Coyote America: A Natural and Supernatural History
by Dan Flores
The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America
by Timothy Egan
Illumination in the Flatwoods: A Season With The Wild Turkey
by Joe Hutto

In my humble opinion, the best hunting books ever written are those by Peter Hathaway Capstick. They are predominantly centered on his career in Africa as a PH, but he also covers dangerous game here in North America (bears) and South America that have turned man-eater. I particularly liked:
- Death in the Long Grass
- Death in the Silent Places
- Maneaters
- Death in the Dark Continent
- Last Horizons, a Return to Africa
- Death in a Lonely Land; and
- Sands of Silence
If you like fiction, then I would highly recommend Robert Ruark's book Something of Value, which covers the Mau Mau uprising and follows a professional hunter turned commando in Rhodesia. Very good book that is far more profound than a simple hunting book.
For more obscure books I really enjoyed One Rifle, One Man, One Land (I think that is the correct title). It follows a doctor that took the North American Super Slam (all 29 big game species) with the same .30-06 rifle. He gives a detailed history of the species and then tells the story of his hunt. It is a great comprehensive look at hunting in North America.

Not a hunting book, but Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose, is great. It's about The Lewis and Clark expedition, and describes the west as fist seen by white men.

I have read these three and they are great.

interesting read but I found it boring at times.

I will never shoot another coyote unless it is an individual causing problems after reading that book. Awesome read. The first part of the book covered all of the native american lore around the coyote. The second part was the history after European contact and then the extermination efforts.
I've read the memoirs of Lewis and Clarke, the Biography of Jim Bridger, and the Autobiography of David Crockett. I'd recommend both if you are interested in trapping and frontier life.
Valerius Geist wrote some awesome coffee table type books. I own Buffalo Nation and Elk Nation. I got them for a couple bucks apiece on ebay and they are beautiful books, I keep them out in the living room to flip through randomly. They have a lot of pictures but also a lot of information.

Stories of the Old Duck Hunters series by Gordon MacQuarrie are pretty fun reads. I also like the Peter Capstick books about hunting in Africa.

Read the Jim Corbett and Kenneth Anderson books about hunting man-eating tigers and leopards in India. They aren’t the best written, but the stories are absolutely amazing and those dudes were not only great hunters, but they did great things for conservation.
