Electric smokers, with pecan, do not make a heavy smoke ring unless you pump wood through it non stop. I was using pecan and cherry for sweetness rather than pursuing an arbitrary color change of smoke ring. (PS... You typically aren't even judged in competition bbq on a smoke ring because it's a chemical reaction rather than an indication of flavor).

The color seems off because I think my phone has taken one too many dips in the water. I just realized my countertop looks blue there rather than grey

As for taste, bark was good, lightly smoked. Fair amount of chiles and Hungarian paprika in the rub, so a lot of silliness from those as well.

I give it a 8-9 on taste (used demara sugar instead of my usual dark brown) and 2 on appearance in that picture

I was just asking if he used smoke. I don't get all caught up on a smoke ring, but it was weird not seeing one at all. I've never cooked with an electric smoker though.

Amazingribs has confirmed that the smoke ring is pretty much a myth. You can get one by cooking meat in the oven.

But do people look for it in BBQ and consider meat with a smoke ring more appetizing? Absolutely

Maybe it was edible and tasted OK. Thats more to do with brisket being amazing though. It wasn't the way you cooked it. I can guarantee that. You did a disservice to a wonderful piece of meat if you ask me.

Rando's looks better. I think people just have their tits in a twist because of the ridiculous way Rando went about cooking it.
