Are they still thick on the Causeway right now or have they started moving back out towards the Gulf of Mexico and into the Rivers?

They arrive in the Fall and leave in the early spring. Avg about 8 pounds a piece. You target them by throwing White sparkle beetles on jig heads and bounce them off the pilings. Very easy to get a quick limit. Find the clean water.

I live off the lake and caught something the other night I was not familiar with. Only weighed about a pound or two. I think it may have been a striper, should have taken a photo. However, it did not really have any stripes on it.

No these fish have Stripes. You have two different types the Hybrid Stripers and native Striped Bass populations in the Lake and both have distinctive stripes. I've never caught on in the lake smaller than 4 pounds.

A couple were caught accidentally on live shrimp by The Wall (ICWW - MRGO) last Saturday. They taste just as good as a trout, but I've never thought of targeting them.

I’ve always called them sheepshead. J/k. I’ve never heard anyone catching stripers in the lake though.

The only time I’ve ever caught them was in Grand Pass in Venice pulling a spoon out the cane and that was a long time ago.

Hybrid Stripers
there are very very few if any hybrid stripers in the lake.....

many white bass though.... and a few actual stripers....

they striper/white hybrids sometimes called wipers have not been stocked (they are sterile) vigorously by LDWF since the 80s...

bayou st john was FULL of them for a while in the 80s.. and they were quite fun....

Striper Article about tagged one caught in the winter and recaught in Central La.

Striped Bass converage at Seabrook article

There is still a healthy population of Hybrid Stripers in the lake that found their way into the lake from the Miss River and from stockings done in Miss. No where near as large as it was when the LaDWLF was stocking them though in the 80s and 90s.

hybrid striper stocking in the Miss river?

Most if not all hybrids were stocked in lakes not rivers....

Up North when the Rivers get high the flood lakes that are stocked and those fish find their way south into the Lake. Ross Barnett stocking in Miss flushes alot out as well which make their way south into the Lake via the Pearl.

I used to catch a ton of them in False River. It's been a few years, but they are very fun to catch.

Interesting. Never thought about them swimming up river. Usually catch a few every year when targeting bar fish. Always thought they came from up north, instead up swimming up from the south+

What you are referring to are white bass which are commonly mistaken for striped bass. I've had luck catching them in large numbers bouncing a "Rucker Rig" in deep holes in the intracoastal and MRGO around lake borgne in the winter

I have a buddy who caught some big ones using Yozuri minnow hard baits, said go when really cold up current of the bridge. Also, was an old hardware in Mandeville that had big stripers mounted on the wall but old guy would never say how he caught them.
