I've got several trips planned this year (Alaska, Santa Fe, New Orleans twice, and Austin), but I've got a week off in October to kill, so thought we'd go to Colorado.

Would fly into Denver, rent a car and drive up to Boulder/Estes Park and get a motel for home base for 3 or 4 days. Want to do some hiking (nothing too crazy, maybe 4-5 mile roundtrip or shorter to waterfalls, peaks etc, drive around RMNP and visit some friends in Ft. Collins.

Then I thought we'd drive down to Colorado Springs and check out Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak etc. Maybe do 2 days there
Then a day in Denver before flying back out. Does this sound ok? Anything we definitely must see/do that I didn't mention? I could pass on Garden of the Gods for something better... Someone mentioned Hanging Lake somewhere? Ousprey? But they also said it's a 5 hr drive.

Any recommendations on motels? Don't need to stay in the heart of downtown as we're good with driving in to save $$$ as this will be our 6th trip in 2018. Under $100/night preferably... How's Airbnb out there?

Maroon Bells, near Aspen. Busy like Disney on summer weekends. Supposedly the most photographed place in CO.

You may want to consider Aspen for a few nights rather than Colorado Springs. Hanging Lake looks about an hour away.

Ouray is probably the town you are thinking of. Southwest CO, in the San Juans. Another beautiful spot.

There is someone here who lives in Ouray, forget the name. Town is smack in the middle of mountains and forests full of trails and 14ers. Also home of world class ice climbing, probably not open in October.

Ouray is out of this world beautiful, I would highly recommend getting down to the San Juan’s & Mesa Verde while you’re out there. Skip Pikes Peak, you aren’t missing anything

Be careful planning in RMNP, trail ridge road typically closes in late October and it's possible anything you want to do is going to involve snowshoes.

Ouray is incredible. A couple hours from my house. However it is over 5 hours from Denver and doesn’t sound doable if you’re only in CO for a few days

I lived in Boulder for a decade. I stay up the hill at the Renaissance Boulder FlatIron Hotel in Superior when I visit. The Boulderado is great if you want to be in the thick of it. GREAT bar and people watching. But for cheap stay off the Boulder turnpike in Superior, Lafayette, Westminster, Broomfield etc and just take the very short drive in every morning. The Springhill Suites in Westminster would work and be in that $100 dollar range.

The Pearl Street Mall is where you want to be in the evening-preferably on a Friday or Saturday. The Boulder Creek is cool as is the bike path along it. Chautauqua for hiking (Mesa Trail for relaxing hike Saddle Rock or Second Flatiron for more strenuous Green Mountain if you are very fit or Mt Sanitis (my fave) if you want short and steep) . You can drive up to Boulder Falls or just enjoy driving through the Boulder Canyon or Sunshine Canyon. Great Bars and restaurants along Pearl Street Mall. The Farmers market, the Tea Room, etc. It's a great place. Give yourself a few days just for Boulder before doing Estes or driving South to Colorado Springs.

Hanging Lake is an incredible hike but it’s near Glenwood Springs. That’s a nice place as well. Swim in the hot springs pool in downtown, get a spa treatment at Yampa Hot Springs Caves - a weird experience but worth the time and $$.
