I got engaged on Saturday night, and my fiance and I are not into the traditional church, tent, renting chairs, inviting people you barely know wedding.

We're leaning towards just the two of us going somewhere very fun instead.

Where should we go? Budget: $10-20k

We went to San Francisco. You can book and pay for the marriage license and (optional) ceremony online. Then you just show up at the beautiful City Hall at your appointment time, present your IDs, get your choice of a ceremony in a side room or under the Rotunda, and hey presto, it’s all done in 1/2 hour. Take yourselves out for an excellent dinner afterward (we went to Quince) and head off to wine country, Big Sur, Monterrey, etc afterward.

Kudos to you for resisting the wedding-industrial complex. What a racket!

If you go out of the states make sure to do your research on requirements for the ceremony to be legal. Some places you have to be there for so many days before the ceremony to legally wed there. Some require blood tests, etc.

^^ What she said. If you opt for an international destination, its way easier to go to the courthouse a few days before you leave and make it official. If you want a ceremony, etc in another country, fine. But keep things simple for yourself and do the official part in the US.

Yeah that is what a friend of mine did when they were wanting to marry on the beach in Mexico. Mexico has a lot of requirements (blood tests, some areas require chest X-rays, license must be in Spanish, etc). Just easier to legally wed in the US before they left for Mexico and have a ceremony on the beach.

To chime in, wife and I went to the courthouse on a Friday afternoon, got married, headed to a long lunch, flew out the next morning to St. Barths. 5 minutes before the call to turn off cellphones came, we sent out a few texts.

Its a nice way to go from engaged to married.

When we briefly considered eloping (recently), we looked hard at doing something at/near Lake Como

A place like Italy would probably be the best. Fly into Florence...take 2 or 3 day long mini-trips to Venice, Milan, Rome, Sicily, etc. Easy to commute via train.

Suggested places like Santorini or a Caribbean island are great, but unless you just want to sit on a beach all day and get black-out drunk every night, it would get boring in a hurry.

It would be your honeymoon also. If you only come up for air between humping sessions, why not sit at a swim-up bar or under a palm tree in a hammock and drink fruity frozen drinks looking at crystal clear water and the sand? Besides, the resort we stayed at had scuba, snorkling, catamaran cruises, jet skis, and a really nice spa and tennis/fitness center, half of which was included (had to pay for the spa, but snorkling, scuba, and sailboat cruises were free). There were also offsite excursions that we hit up, like zip lining, or you could go buy some "brownies" from down the street. It's not just a week at Sand Destin

Did you have to sell her on this or was it her idea?
