Starting to plan an Elk or Mule Deer hunt out West in the next couple of years.
Posted by NoMoreKnees on 2/9/18 at 2:39 pm00
I am asking for suggestions for a new rifle for the trip. I have hunted AL, MS and TN for years with my 30.06 bolt action with never any issues recovering anything that I have pulled the trigger on. Most of my shots have been around 100 yards but I have taken a nice buck at 305 yards several years a go.
What do you all with experience out west suggest?

The 30-06 is fine as long as you have some quality glass on it that allows you to shoot 300 yards plus with confidence. Also you should practice shooting those distances. I’ve killed 4 elk with a 30-06. The furthest shot being 280 yards.

Most hunters out that way shoot 300's for the power on bigger animals. A 30-06 will work if you're comfortable with it and make a good shot. I shot a 7mag when I went for the same reason, and it worked. I will say that most elk shots you get, they won't be that close and they probably won't be standing still. The mule deer are easy.

Wife and sister-in-law had planned a trip to Europe years. Sister-in-law kicked her husband to the curb. I will be 3rd wheel and going to let them go without me. Have not gotten that far. Colorado or New Mexico due to having contacts there.

I shoot 150 gr here. If I stay with the 30.06 what is your suggestion?

My 35 whelen did just fine this year but I will be going back to my 700 in 308 for the future. My best advice is practice at whatever distance you plan on shooting. A rifle that you are accustomed to and comfortable with is a good companion for out west.
For a 30-06, check out the hornady 178gr ELD-x bullets. Have read good things on this ammo

My friend that lives in Montana the past several years has killed all his elk, 5-6 I believe, with a .270.
I think your 30-06 is fine.

I shoot an X-Bolt .300 WSM with a 190g Nosler Partition when I go out West for Elk.. I would check your ballistics on whatever you decide to go with and zero in at 200 yds. Keep your ballistics chart with you, bring a range finder and make adjustments if a shot presents itself. Aim for vitals and absolutely, I repeat, ABSOLUTELY be ready to fire off another round if the opportunity presents itself-

Been hunting elk and deer in Co for the past 30 years. Started with a 7mm that kicked like a mule. Went to a .270 Ruger that will kill the shite out of either.

My elk rifle is a 300 WBY with 180 grain Nosler Partition
Mule deer rifle is 257 WBY with 115 grain Ballistic Tips
.30-06 is a fine North American round.
Know what it will do at 400 yards.
