This book has long been on my list to read, but has always been too intimidating for me to start. Decided I was going to read it this year by reading just one chapter per day. It's going to take most of the year, but I'll get it read. Most of the chapters are less than 10 pages, so it should only take 15-30 minutes per day.

That book is long just to be so. You have a billion books out there. Why tackle something just to say you have read it?

Where did I say I was reading it just to say i did? I've long been intrigued by it, and it being labeled one of the greatest novels ever written.

I'm in the same boat. I tackled Brothers Karamazov last year and it was quite an investment but well worth the effort. I'm hoping War and Peace is similar in that regard.

To even be the slightest bit cultured in almost any respect the individual would at least have to have read the classics. War and Peace being one of those.

Anna Kerenina is a better book, in my opinion.

A week into this, and I've foudn that I prefer skipping a day, and reading 2 chapters every other day. Pretty good start, though the translation I chose kept the French, so I've been reading a LOT of footnotes for translation since my French is very bad.

It's a good book and definitely worth reading. I preferred Dostoyevsky over Tolstoy but you can't go wrong with the latter either.

War and Peace is fantastic. Stick with it—you'll feel attached to the characters by the end.

So a little over 3 months into this and some thoughts...

1. Really wish I hadn't chosen a translation that kept the French in place. Having to read so many footnotes for the translations is really annoying. The good news is only the first part of the book has French in it.

2. Holy moly at the number of characters introduced in the first 100 or so pages, and so many with similar names. A bit overwhelming.

3. I have failed miserably and keeping myself to one chapter/section per day over the last few weeks, but I read for a good 3-4 hours yesterday so I'm still on the original pace.

4. The reason I got back on track is has really picked up the last 50-60 pages. I am hooked and getting to the point where I'm counting down the next chance I have to crack it open.

When I first began War and Peace, I used an audiobook (free on YouTube). When I started in the book, I had the same problems with the translation. Luckily, my grandmother had the same book translation as my audiobook, so I switched to it. The translation makes a big difference.

Don't waste your time. I read it just to say I have and want my time back.
