There might be a whole Chinese rebellion fleet in the next movie full of Chinese ships and cuddly Pandas that saves the day.
Wouldn't be surprised actually. The furry penguins seemed to modeled after Japanese characters.
Let's get the Chinese bought in next.

There is no way they could have realistically had 2 billion as a goal. Empire made not 69% of ANH’s worldwide box office and AOTC only made 63% of TPM’s worldwide gross. That would be about 1.29 billion to 1.43 billion for TLJ. So 1.5 billion would have been a realistic goal, not 2 billion.
Huh?
The orginal star wars released multiple times. That doesn't happen anymore.

“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” Star Wars is initially released in just 32 cinemas, grossing $307,263,857 during its first 18-month run.
It ended at 786,000,000 only after multiple releases.
Totally different landscape.
And the prequel sucked. TFA did not. TPM killed hype.
I think they expected a range of around 1.5 bil to 2 bil. I thought they would get 2 bil before seeing it. There was so many positives.
TFA hype
Luke hype
Fisher last movie

My point is that the second installments has had a significant drop, which is not uncommon, so 2 billion was not a realistic figure for TLJ.

Explain to me why LOTR, another epic trilogy, grossed more every next release?
Also why did the Nolan Batman trilogy increase?
Let me explain it to you. Because each movie is as good or better.
The Prequals blew but they had the hype for the first one.
The OT was just a different time period.
TFA had great hype but did nothing to kill it. TLJ will kill episode 9.

It we use the opening weekend as a barometer, then TLJ would be expected to gross about 1.8 billion. Considering the holds for the TFA were amazing (3.8 multipier is unheard of for such a large opening), 1.8 billion is undoubtedly probably an upperbound.
So realistically 1.5 to 1.6 billion would be the most reasonable expectation, and I see it ending with about 1.4 billion, depending on what happens in China. It's probably underperforming, but not by anywhere close to a half a billion.

Dude what?
TFA was 248 mil
TLJ was 220 mil
10% is some huge spread for you now? And it would have easily been closer or exceeded if it wasn't shite IMO.
TFA held because it was a good movie.
TLJ is not because it sucks.
It's not brain science.

quote:No. It wouldn't have. First day gross was down over 12%. Word of mouth wouldn't have impacted that first day. So clearly the hype for TLJ was not at the level of TFA, although it's holding much worse so that says it's not as well liked.

That being said, it will still have a strong multiplier for such a large opening, so it's not holding as terribly as people are acting like, although far worse than TFA, but that was never a realistic expectation for any film.

Lol you will spin this anyway you want. You don't think fanboys wouldn't have walked right back in and watched it again if they liked it the same day? This happens all the time. The ones who go day one are extreme.
Even if the hype was more for TFA like you say we are talking about 10 to 12% on day 1 and the opening weekend.
TLJ in 18 days 531,511,829 domestic
TFA in 18 days 750,230,824 domestic
But ignore the record drops, all the hate, all the user scores.

It's still going to make well over 400 million and over 65% if it’s domestic intake after the opening weekend. Poorly received films usually only make 55 to 50 percent after opening weekend.
So while word of mouth will probably cause it to underperform v. expectations, it’s not performing like a film with bad WOM, just not to a level that was set with TFA.

What? So the ticket you are telling me was not sold, because it did not have the same hype, is not there for them to buy? This is bullshite because my Thursday viewing had plenty of openings on the edges.

You cannot compare this movie to a standard run of the mil bad movie. This is Starwars, it is an event. I went twice. I hated it the first time but went twice. How can you not understand that.

quote:I’m saying after getting out of a 3 hour movie, there are only limited number of screenings left, and decreasingly the later the initial viewing occured. And when with a lower gross, a 106 million first day gross had a lot of full or bead capacity viewings, expecially again, later in the evening.
What? So the ticket you are telling me was not sold, because it did not have the same hype, is not there for them to buy?
quote:It's more of an event to you, clearly, than most people. And I was comparing it to movies like Harry Potter, DC, Marvel, etc. which have huge fan bases too.

Disney knows that whatever Star Wars movie they put out will gross 100's of millions of dollars. They also know they will make triple what they make on the movie in merchandising. They are laughing all the way to the bank.
