I'm like others here who have been reading since they were very young. I started out with military history strangely enough. I could never get enough stories about WWII.
I refused to read fantasy novels though. I thought they were dumb growing up. One summer though for Advanced English in HS I had to read The Hobbit. And that was that
I still enjoy a good historical fiction novel from time to time, but the majority of my reading is fantasy. I'll rotate in one of my political philosophy books on occasion just to keep the material fresh as well. Just finished up my reread of Memory, Sorry, Thorn and about halfway in to The Heart of What Was Lost.

Could you recommend some military history books? I've read Fly Boys and enjoyed that one.
I like WW2 but would definitely be interested in learning about WW1 or the Civil War or the Revolution.

You sound like a friend of mine who used to be a big reader, but has minimal free time anymore. I suggested a book to him and he said, "I'll check it out. I'll let you know in 6 months or a year if I liked it." I asked him what he meant. He said, "The only time I get to read is when I go to bed. But I'm so tired, I usually only make it through two or three pages before I fall asleep. To make matters worse, I can't remember the last page or two I read. It was a funny story and I'm sure there was some slight exaggeration involved, but it wasn't too far from the truth. The guy was working his arse off.

Sometimes as a kid I would sit in the car just to be by myself and read. Anyone else here ever do that?
I went on a camping trip with five small children (ages 4 to 9) who had never been camping before, with three adults to show them how it's done. It was cold that night and in the morning. We notice we're missing a 7 year old child and I quickly find him in his dad's Suburban reading a book. I asked him if he didn't want to play with the other kids. Nope. "They get too wild when they're all together. I don't like it. I'm reading the knot book you got us, so I'm learning how to camp, but I'm just doing it in here." Good enough. It was cold and the other kids were wild. He wasn't playing a video game, so I was satisfied.
That afternoon, we're driving home and the reader asks, "Dad, Do you have a 24" plank in the garage?" Plank?!? What 7 year old asks for a "plank"?
Dad answers, "Sure, Hank. I have plenty of scrap wood. Does it have to be exactly 24" long?"
The kid says, "That's what the diagram says."
"What diagram? What are you planning on building?"
"Nothing. I found an interesting knot that I want to tie."
His father and I start laughing, and tell him we're sure we can find a suitable piece of wood.
"What is the knot called that you found so interesting?"
"Plank hitch."
We look at each other and laugh harder. WTF is a plank hitch? Conversation ends and we still have another hour before we get home.
That evening, he brings up the subject again. He's ready to tie his knot. We fetch him a board and he ties his knot. He studies it for a minute and asks me if it's correct. I tell him we need to find the book to check because not only don't I know how to tie a plank hitch, I'd never heard of one before a few hours earlier. As I'm flipping through the book trying to find the page with a plank hitch on it, Hank says, "Page 242."
"What?"
"Plank hitch is on page 242."
And it was and he'd tied it correctly. His dad and I get all excited, thinking we've got a knot Rainman on our hands and ask, "What other knots did you learn?" Nothing. Plank hitch was the only one he found interesting.
Sweet kid, but he definitely marches to his own drummer.

Not me. I've been a reader as long as I can remember. Had the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books in elementary school and read them all. Can't ever remember a time when I didn't have a book with me and at least 3 on reserve on my shelf to be read.

I love reading now but I hated it in high school/college. I wish I had read a little more back then but overall don't regret it though because your only young once and the things I was doing then were more fun than reading.

This! I didn't read as much during school or college even because I knew there was other reading I needed to do. After grad school, it took me a while to start reading for fun again. I've kept up with about 25-30 books/year since 2011 when I read 30 in one summer.

I never thought it was stupid. I read a bit in high school. I don't think I read a single non-school related book during college, but it was because I was busy or had a tv available. Once I graduated and started working, I started to read a lot at work. I don't read at all at home.

I've been reading ever since I could put letters together. My Mom would order stuff from the Scholastic Book Club (does that still exist?), and I checked many a book from the library. My Dad was an avid reader, and I read whatever he read after he read it.
I have hundreds of books, and reading has been a lifelong pleasure.
