IIRC, it's called the Kanashibari effect.

In Japan, the shadowy figures are reported as demonic figures. In America, the shadowy figures are usually perceived as aliens in the room.

It was happening to me so often, I read up a bit on this subject. Now, I can semi-control flying on-demand in dreams, levitation/weightless sensation when I am just falling asleep, and even brief out-of-body experiences looking back at myself (which I've only been able to induce twice).

The paralysis was the only negative part I had to deal with, but accepting it, expecting it, seems to shorten the duration for me.

Wait till you have one where you feel like you can't breath.. I get them every few months.. if it continues you will learn to calm yourself and wake up the rest of your brain

The theory is that your eyes are somehow opening and sending images to your brain, but you’re still in sleep mode. In sleep mode, your body is paralyzed so that you won’t injure yourself while dreaming. Basically, because you’re still dreaming, your subconscious can basically insert images onto what you’re seeing. Your subconscious is often much more emotional than your full conscious mind, so when you realize you cannot move, it quickly goes into terrified panic. The subconscious translates terror into nightmare and puts out images of scary arse shiite onto whatever your open eyes are seeing (your room). When you finally wake up, the dream images immediately disappear and you can move. Basically, if’s a semi waking dream. The experience is so haunting, though, that centuries of superstitions have built up around it, attributing the phenomenon to a demon called “The Old Hag”.

That's a long winding explanation. What if it's just shadowy figures in the room?

Look, I can say stop sleeping on your back but that’s just dumb advice to not sleep on your back the rest of your life. So I will say quit being a mental bitch. When you realize you are in an episode of sleep paralysis, start moving your extremities (fingers or toes), sometimes you will have to make sudden jerk movements. It isn’t that difficult. Once you move your extremities, you will be able to move the limb attached and before you know it you have full body control.

The other option, if like me who has gotten accustomed to sleep paralysis, is to catch yourself as soon as you fall into it and suddenly jerk your body then move onto your side.

Both of these methods aren’t difficult, only mentally weak people are helpless.

Then you need to call a catholic priest because

Or, you’re being abducted by aliens. Supposedly, the little greys (workers for ETs) have the ability to put people in sleep paralyse while abducting and/or returning them. If one wakes up during an abduction, they would experience sleep paralysis.

It has happened to me and yes it is terrifying while it is happening. Once I wake up I am fine and it is like nothing has happened.

It happens to me. I don’t mind. I realize what’s happening and just chill. It’s peaceful if you let it be.

Yes. Mine happens intermittently. Always feels like someone is sitting on me. Scares the crap out of me until I realize what's going on. I also don't see the old hag.

Drink yourself to sleep, you won't remember a thing.

Agree with what he said. I’ve had them since a kid. I’ve learned to enjoy the ride. Most of the time I’m fighting someone and can’t punch back.

Could be a symptom of several different things. If it happens again, see a physician.
