Well we ended up going the JB Weld route. Think we did everything right except for cleaning the bare aluminum with acetone. Sanded to bare metal, cleaned it well with wet rag, the applied jb weld (both sides) to the screw holes. May test it out this weekend. Should be all good, id imagine.

5200 for all of your adhesive and sealing jobs on boats

5200 is great for fiberglass but I've seen pics on tinboats where it has caused corrosion on aluminum, especially in saltwater. It's like that boards version of the hi fence debate here, they have pages of people arguing about it.

This is why I went with the JB Weld. On the packaging for the 5200, it said for gel coats and fiberglass. JB Weld said for different metals and for marine applications.

Find someone who has some tar. Chip off a piece and melt it down on hole. Will hold for years!!!

Really? Never heard of that happening but I suppose it's possible. I don't know much about 5200 other than it's a polyurethane sealant that is worshiped as a god in the sportfisher industry.

When I build my big aluminum boat, it's going to have anodes so I don't have to worry about shite like that.

Where are you located?

ETA: Never mind. I see you got it figured out.

It's dumb not to on an aluminum boat that will see salt, that's usually what they're arguing about.

Do yall know what the difference is between JB Weld and JB's Marine Weld? We just used regular JB Weld because we didn't see the Marine Weld. The one we used says marine use on it. Does the Marine Weld have something extra in it?

Also, he went drop that bad boy in lake martin early today, and texted me it seems to be all good. Said he only left it is for a few minutes, but it stayed dry as a bone. I'm gonna help him smooth it out a little later, then paint it, and it should be like new.

Yea that's just asking for it. Might have more to do with having a hole there than the sealant.

I would personally put a couple of pop rivets in the holes and forget about them.

a handheld propane torch from Ace and some Alumiweld rods will fix that right up and you will have enough shite left over to do it 25 more times.
