Anime is extremely hit or miss for me, but when it hits, it just knocks it out of the park. Just wrapped up this doozy, and it is utterly spectacular. It's got a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and I find to be very accessible for American audiences. This is without question one of the most well animated movies I've ever seen come out of Japan. This movie was made in 2016 and I think it's on Miyazaki's level. It's frustrating as shite in points, but stick with it for it all pays off.

I'm not even going to spoil the concept for it here since I think it's best if you go in blind. It gets my highest recommendation. Check it out.

Bought it on Amazon. Was highly recommended by a friend.

While I think you should go in blind, here is the trailer: LINK

I started to watch it when Kodi was up and running but couldn't deal with the subtitles at the time. Wish I would have now that kodi is pretty much gone.

I've been wanting to see this. It got a lot of buzz when it came out and I was waiting for it to drop in the states.

Shinkai has been the best animated director behind Miyazaki for the past decade or so. Glad he is still going strong. Anime is pretty much trash nowadays. It seems like the only good anime we get is when Ghibli or Shinkai releases a new film every couple of years.

I also have to say that I'll be shocked if they don't remake this in live action for an American audience. This kind of subject matter should have mass appeal, but tons of people won't see it simply due to the bias against anime. Just trade Tokyo for New York and some rural background somewhere in the Rockies or Appalachians, and it would probably work. I'm not advocating for this, but there's no way some American producers aren't trying to get the rights to this as we speak.

Glad to see your recommendation for this. Anime is hit and miss for me as well but this sounded interesting and I'd seen it's good score but could never pull the trigger on buying it. I may just go out and get it now.

Looks like I may be psychic, because look what I wrote earlier today about this saying that some producers are fighting for the rights to a live action remake of it. Turns out JJ won the fight. I swear on my life I read nothing about this earlier.

The good news is Eric Heisserer who penned Arrival is writing the script, which I think is a good choice with the material.

Why can't JJ Abrams spare us and just go away already

IMO, JJ is a much better producer than director. Like he produces Westworld for instance. He usually hires very good writers, and I like his choice here as well. I can't say I'm ecstatic they're remaking it since I'd rather people just watch the original, but it just reeked of possibly the easiest anime to convert to live action that I have seen.

Just watched it and it's a fantastic movie. Little cheesy at times but that's to be expected. A great movie to watch with a gf,date, or wife.
