I have a bunch of sandbags left over from the flood (they didn't help). Finally getting around to fix up my yard now that my house work is slowing down. The trash claws took my debris as well as big chunks of sod/dirt. Is it a good idea to use the sand from the sandbags to fill in the holes? The sand is mostly dirt anyways... I feel like this has probably been asked already. Couldn't find anything in a search except for bad memories from the flood.

Sand is fine. River silt is better

I used the sand from my son's old basketball goal bottom. It was the play sand they sell at Lowes. It was just for some small areas here and there, but worked fine. This was late July last year and you can't tell where the sand was put down.

It worked for me

it will work fine. most of the sand that was provided for sandbags was riversilt which is even better.

yep, the sand is river sand, also called "sugar sand" and it self levels and almost melts into the ground when it rains. the downside to it is until the grass locks it in place with a good root system, its easy to be displaced by a lawn mower or something driving over it so its best to dig up some of your dirt, put the sand in the hole, then put your "better" dirt over it and it will be more stable and less likely to shift under the lawn mower if its in a place where you normally turn the wheels.

Yea 'mostly' was a bad choice of words. It seems like there is a lot of dirt in with the sand? Now that I know it's probably river silt that makes a lot more sense.
