ESPN/SEC Network while Tailgating

Is the only way to watch these channels is to have a satellite with direct TV or the tailgater with Dish network? Ive always used an HD antenna and got the 11:30 ABC game and the 2:30 CBS game. looking into upgrading this year so we can have College Gameday and ESPN in general.

I guess you could get watchespn over a wifi hotspot, but the towers will probably be too saturated and you will run up a nice data bill.

We use a smart phone with an unlimited data plan and log onto WatchESPN. Phone hooked to TV with HDMI cable. Both powered with small generator that also runs fans etc. By mid to late afternoon signal starts to give problems with so many people on campus but we basically reboot and get it going again. Works well enough to keep most people happy.

We will be going to Dish Network pay as you go this season. So I can't report yet how that's worked for us. For 2 seasons we used the Lightning HDMI adapter to rotate phones and use watchESPN. Exactly like others have said it become very slow around the time the 2:30 games were starting. But we also found that rebooting the app (not the phone) was enough to get it going again for a while. Honestly it's about $60 for a dish, $40 for a tripod, $80 for the receiver (so approximately $180 startup cost) and then $140-$210 (depending on how the schedule goes) per season for the monthly subscription. If it's split between several guys and you plan on having this tailgate for several seasons, it may be in your best interest to go with Dish.

I made the switch to Dish 2 years ago and bought the Tailgater package ( portable satellite and receiver). The package for both was about $400. Well worth it. I had the subscription so it just cost $7 a month extra for the receiver and I had all the channels. I am now back with Directv but I still have the tailgater because I paid for it rather than rent the equipment. First week in September I'm restarting my subscription ( currently on Pause for $5 a month) and will get there basic package for $50 a month. That will have all the local channels plus the sports package ( ESPN and SEC network along with PAC 12 and Big Ten). Dish is a better option bc with the tailgater all you have to do is hook up satellite to receiver, receiver to TV, and make sure nothing is blocking the satellite. Takes about 10 mins to get signal. Only time I lost a signal was when it down poured before one of the games last year.

Where are you getting $50 a month from? It looks like I'm gonna have to pay $70 because they don't give you the discounted price because it's pay as you go.

Bc I was a customer for 2 years. Their lowest deal package is $49 a month. Since you are not a customer there are not going to give you the $50 deal. They want to keep me as a customer so I am getting the lowest package price for when I activate. My account is currently on a hold/pause and I only pay $5 a month for that. Can only have it on hold for 3 months at a time tho. I might have to cancel after football season and do a pay as I go under a new account. I will talk to them to see if I can negotiate something that works for me and go from there.

Last year I used watch ESPN until campus got crowded and the towers got overloaded. But, that usually doesn't happen until 2 or so we can always watch game day and then switch over to antenna.

i also do watch espn via hdmi and unlimited data until 2:30 then switch to antenna. maybe the wife will let me get the tailgater one day

If you, or someone you know, has a direct TV account already you can take a satellite box with a working card that is not network dependent (not Genie or slitter box off of Genie) and a Tailgater or Winegard carry out satellite antenna and get every channel that account is subscribed to with no monthly costs or additional plans... these satellite antenna are self pointing once you connect them to a power source so they are extremely easy to set up and only run a few hundred dollars... I hook one my TV's up this way for non network games/gameday/sec now for the morning hours and for the off network games from 11-till and use the HD antenna on the other two tvs to view the CBS/NBC/ABC games... works beautifully.

Anyone tried to use Sling TV out there somehow? The biggest issue is wifi or data from what I can tell
