I wonder why you never see these at high fenced exotic places, if you can keep an elk alive I'd figure you can keep one of these alive

Caribou have hollow hair, like the polar bear, that insulates vs the cold and an undercoat. Two layers. Main part of their diet is deer lichen so they have to travel long distances to get proper nutrition. They wouldn't fare well in a hot climate, high fenced environment. Good place to hunt them is off the Denali Hwy. I don't believe you have to have a guide for Caribou in any of the management areas.

No guide for this hunt, but they had an outfitter supply them with tents, cots, etc and air transportation once they got to dead horse

Gotcha.

Great place to Caribou hunt if you have mileage or don't mind paying the air fare is Adak Island in the Aleutians. Military shut down the base there so there are bunkers all over the island you can stay for free. Caribou are on a treeless (but some steep elevation gains) Island. It's always been popular for waterfowl, but Adak caribou hunts are gaining in popularity.

Denali Hwy is a good place as well as you can drive the road and hunt in relative proximity to your transportation, which is rare in most of AK. It's on the road system back to Anchorage.

That's awesome. I'm wanting to take some time off next summer and doing some traveling up that way myself. This job has me tied down too much and I'm going to make some changes.
