Everyone is starting their own free agent thread. Here's mine with a different slant to brighten your outlook. The Saints will be making some significant moves with the current 2014 contract obligations projecting to at least $8-10mil over the cap. The biggest headline will be if Graham gets a deal or is tagged- and would that be a $7mil TE tag or $10mil WR tag. Besides that there are plenty of other major decisions.
The Saints will be heading into the 9th year of the Payton era. We are pretty far down the road, as far as key players that need to get paid. Managing this, is a key element of long term success. If you examine the niners, the panthers, & chickens you can see they have yet to deal with the first wave of players that need to be paid. Their time is coming! Just like Goodwin, Nicks, & Bushrod all left only for bigger money these teams are gonna be challenged to see if they can keep success going with a very different cap.
Just a quick survey of seachicken players who will require many more millions of cap...
Percy Harvin 2013 $4.9mil to 2014 $13.4mil
Cliff Avril 2013 $3.8mil to $9.3mil
Earl Thomas last year of rookie deal will command mega bucks
CB Byron Maxwell last year of rookie deal
CB Richard Sherman in last year of rookie deal $690K, uber mega bucks coming
LB Bobby Wagner 2 more years on rookie deal
Lastly, Russell Wilson 2 more season under $1mil a year (and you thought Brees for $10mil was a deal).

Michael Bennett, Golden Tate, Walter Thurmond, Kicker Hauschka
2014 Potential Cuts for cap help (amount saved)-
Chris Clemons $7.5mil
Sidney Rice $7.3mil
Cliff Avril $7mil
Red Bryant $5.5mil
Brandon Mebane $5.3mil
I'll look at the kitty cats & niners in their own threads. Bottom line: know another giant sized shoe is gonna be dropping on these NFC competitors. Becoming a contender is one thing. Staying there 9 years later is another. I'm pretty happy knowing our team is several cycles beyond these teams and still in the running.

This is also why I don't want them to win this year, because they could still do it next year prior to Wilson getting a new contract. I don't want them to be a new Dynasty. Same could be said of the 49ers I guess.

that's the point of looking at these. Putting together a contender from scratch is usually not a big challenge capwise. Continuing beyond that initial group, that usually has some obscenely underpaid key players is a completely different beast. This is year 4 for Carroll in Seattle and year 3 for Harbaugh. The 2009 championship was year 4 for Payton. We were still looking to the future when we would have to pay Brees, etc. We know now that with every year of success the vice of the cap only gets tighter. Continuous infusion of fresh, younger, and most importantly cheaper players is necessary. There's a lot to be optimistic about with the number of guys we are going to get some good miles out of before they have to be paid or walk.

SO they got quite a few cuttable pieces that aren't major contributors and most of their hard core guys are still under rookie deals next yr. great blues, this fricking sucks.

sucks now but the point is their suckage is greater than ours going forward. It's gonna be tough to pay all of Sherman, Maxwell, & Thomas right off

But what will he be worth? If he’d stepped up and delivered in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game at Seattle, Kaepernick may have landed in the $18 million annual atmosphere. With a year left on his rookie deal, the challenge becomes putting a value on him right now that will reflect not only what he has done, but what he will do moving forward.
Receiver Michael Crabtree may think it’s time to get a new deal, too. He has played five years of a six-year, first-round deal from 2009. Due to earn a base salary of $3.5 million in 2014, Crabtree can make a strong case that he is underpaid.
Crabtree isn’t the only receiver who’ll want to be compensated. Anquan Boldin’s contract has expired, a year after the 49ers picked up the last year of it via a trade with the Ravens. If the 49ers let him go, good luck replacing his production and leadership.
And what about Aldon Smith? The seventh overall pick in 2011 didn’t receive a top-10 windfall, thanks to the rookie wage scale. While off-field issues have created a presumption that the 49ers will opt to wait, Smith’s performances can’t be denied. Apart from two sacks on Sunday in Seattle and 1.5 two weeks earlier in Green Bay, Smith has 42 sacks in 43 career regular-season games.

Dunno if I have a clearcut read on the specifics of the cap for SF, Sea, or Caro. Wherever they are at, all Saints fans should be optimistic over the basic fact that "their day is coming!". The Saints rode to the SB on the backs of a lot of rookie deals and having an elite QB at least 50% below his market value. They have gone on and continued to contend. There are a lot of teams that can make a move or be in such favorable cap positions in the first 3-4 yrs of a regime. It is a whole nutha animal to continue success after you have to start paying your stars. Saints have been there, done that. seachickens, niners, & panthers all have to prove they can cross those bridges.
