I'll be interested to read Luttrell's book to see his arguments regarding ROE. Just from the movie I was surprised at the stance he took and totally didn't see it coming before watching. And while the team's decision ultimately rested with the team leader, and I'm not trying to be judgmental here, but
SPOILERS
Luttrell's actions kind of bothered me when he was more concerned with freaking CNN than the ~200 Taliban fighters that are just below his position. And it would be one thing if the old man and two kids they checked were clean, but once you factor in the radio and the kids escape attempt I don't see how you don't at least leave them tied to the trees as you make your evac. You don't want to kill them, fine, but I just can't see letting them go given the circumstances (enemy force size, team size, terrain, lack of comms, etc). I'm obviously in no position to judge or assess their actions, but it just irked me the way the film portrayed Luttrell's willingness to put media concerns above the safety of his team, much less the success of the OP. Again, I haven't read his book yet so I'm sure he goes into it more. Just a bad situation.

I was super excited about it going in because it is right up my alley and I feel like an a-hole for maybe under rating it but it just wasn't what I was hoping for.
Like I said earlier, the middle act was just way too long. An hour long firefight was too much. It became less of a movie and more like watching someone play Call of Duty at some point during that stretch.
I compared it to Platoon and that was just stupid. The obvious movie to compare this to is Blackhawk Down. It's not nearly as good as BHD.
It just didn't get over the hump for me. Like I said last night:
Act 1: Here are the characters
Act 2: An hour long Call of Duty game
Act 3: Preachy
Sorry.

I know from Restrepo that there are wooded areas in the higher elevations of Afghanistan, it just looked like the piney woods of Northwest Louisiana, lol.

I appreciate the criticism. I had the same reaction to the opening scene in the helicopter. It's just not Kunar. It's probably the best they could do though.

I got to go see a screener last night. I was pretty pleased overall, the only thing that I kind of feel nit picky about was Emile Hirsche playing Dietz. He just doesn't have that look of an elite warrior that all 3 of the others pretty easily pulled off. In those super dramatic moments, I almost envisioned the other guys as the actual characters I've read or always heard about.... But with him, I just kept seeing the kid from "The Girl Next Door."
Spoilers I guess just in case.....
Totally agree with whoever said that about the tumbling down the mountain scene. That shite made me hurt so bad. I think I'd rather take a few 7.62 than to fall down that fricker. Watching that gave me a migraine. And there were a few heart tugging moments that got me. I'm not sure it's better than Black Hawk down, but it's def in my top 5 military movies now. I pretty much love everything Peter Berg does. It had the same heart and emotion as FNL, only applied to a way more intense premise than anything football related. I want to watch it again in a few months before I anoint it as my favorite military movie ever...... But it is in the running right now.

If your really interested in the story then may I suggest the book Victory Point by Ed Darack. It tells the Marine Corps version of the story. They originally planned the mission but got pushed out by SOCOM. Then the SOCOM brass totally fricked Lutrell and his men by sending them in like they did. It also ends in a pretty intense battle in the same battle with the same enemy forces that took on the SEALs. Lone Survivor is a better book but Victory Point is good as well and gives a different perspective.
