i've been enjoying messing around with it. there are a few things i've noticed.
1) pels are in the bottom 3rd of the league in games played where it was within 5 points with under 5 minutes left. this means either we are blowing people out (not happening) or we are getting blown out
2) the shooting percentage is pretty middle of the pack for just about however you break it down…with under 2 minutes left and the game within 5, they are shooting 36ish%, which is right in the middle.
3) our net efficiency is actually pretty decent at +4, which is weird…wouldn't that translate to more wins?
4) somehow memphis is at the top of a lot of the advanced metrics. i guess that's cause for celebration?

:crickets:
but on a serious note...we haven't finished our games well. One thing im sure this team will improve upon is finishing games.

I like the post, but I do not like this idea of clutch stats.
First, it seems quite arbitrary basing this on points and time rather than possessions or some other definition.
It's a fine cut at the data, bit I just don't value it more than anything else.
That said... Middlin'. Which is expected, and that is good.
Also, I just do not see close games as amenable to statistical analysis as the rest of the game. In those close game situations, stats go out the window, and the game becomes tactical and dependant on a myriad of factors that play an important role. Thus, I think there is less commonality from clutch situation to clutch situation. You can run the numbers, but I think the predictive power of them is more suspect than those in regular game situations, even accounting for sample size effects.

Good post, too busy to give any feedback though.

you may be able to break it down by other things, too…NBA's new stats section is just the best of any site i've seen for any sport. it's quite an amazing tool. but i do get what you're saying. i don't think it tells the full story, but i think there are some insights to be gained from it.

Far from useless. I just dislike when people sort of view these stats as the most important arbitrarily. The Kobe is not clutch thing is annoying, for instance.
You did not do this. Just trying to discuss the stats since the result was expected (so, good info... Just not the most important info).

nice post.
some of the “clutch" stuff is embryonic for this team. I bet Davis ends up being the guy, but he isn't ready yet. So we end up seeing a flawed option (a hobbled Gordon, Anderson is not really an on ball creator, Holiday is not a great decision maker-he is improving IMO- or finisher, Evans cant hit a jumper) more often in this spot.
Quite interesting that the defense is significantly better. Lots of noise here, but interesting nonetheless.
