Yahoo vs. Google Finance - Historical Prices

Reviewing cost basis on HPQ (9/24/98, specifically). There is an inconsistency between the two sites and I wanted to see if anyone could explain why there is.
Yahoo finance says $17.14, Google says $26.69.
Yahoo has an footnote saying
I'm assuming Google adjusts for splits, but maybe not dividends? What does adjusting for dividends mean anyways?

Yahoo gives the prices "as they happened", in addition to the adjusted close price. You can see that on that date HPQ actually closed at $53.38, exactly double the price Google shows of $26.69. So, clearly, you are right in that Google adjusts for splits. Yahoo obviously takes it a step further and adjusts for dividends, as well. I believe that the difference in Google's and Yahoo's prices ($26.69 - $17.14 = $9.55) is the amount per share that HPQ has paid out in dividends since that date.

So I'm assuming HPQ has split once since that date?
Thanks for the clarification
