I'm not the couple-dozen-books-each-week reader like I was when I was a kid (at the prices they are now I would go broke!), but I pick up a storyline-based graphic novel version of books from time to time. I tried the Astonishing stuff, but it just didn't feel right. I think I'm too much of a visual person with my comics so I get caught up in how Scott's new look makes him look like a blue/black penis or Beast's more catlike look (which I freaking hate) during that run.

The whole search-for-a-cure storyline felt "sputtering" to me, especially being spread out among so many books, and that's around the point my X-attentions dropped off.

Kind of how I feel about the Claremont run. Yeah it estabished some new mutants, but I never cared for the characterzation of some of the more classic characters. In addition to that, Claremont sort of went off his rocker. The new era, which I believe starts at Whedon's Astonishing-a well reviewed book,btw- challenged the Claremont guard of Xavier being so damn special and brought the natural maturation of the central character in X-Men. Previously, Cyclops was very much like early Peter Parker filled with self doubt and his closest allies were always limiting his potential.

As the heir apparent, it is only natural for Scott to finally take over the mutant cause and along the way exposed Xavier for being somewhat of a psychpath pedophile,Hank exposed for his incredible ego and Jean as some batshit crazy girl who isn't worth it. To a point, even Logan and Scott became the closest of allies, until Logan found religion.

What I find most interesting is that Scott has now found the correct position between Erik and Charles. I only fear that an inevitable status quo reboot to drop and Erik/Emma have manipulating Scott this whole time. The X-Men are better off split up into subgroups.
