Alright, so I just went on a deleting spree of music in my iTunes account and have it down to 21.39 gigabytes. I want to start building back my library and diversifying a little bit more. I've got a couple of questions..

1. For those of you with large music libraries, do you have trouble storing them? If not, how do you do store? (External hard drive?)

2. How do you get your music these days?

3. I'm on a huge Jazz kick again so what are some names I should be looking for?

Thanks in advance.

Yea, get a drive. I have an external drive I got like 7-8 years ago that I filled up a few months ago.

Went out and got a terabyte hard drive and just transferred everything to it. I doubt I'll ever fill that bad boy up though.

Torrents. I had a demonoid account until they shut it down. I use a mix of kickass torrents (kickass.to) and a few other random sites now, but it's nowhere near as good. I'd love to get a what.cd invite but so far haven't been hooked up.

I'm not a big jazz guy so I'm pretty useless here. I like Vince Guaraldi a lot though.

I tried really hard to like all the Miles Davis/Coltrane kind of stuff but it never clicked for me.

Nice, I'll probably do that.

I used to use torrents but my computer is on the last leg (not due to torrents) so I stopped. Do you worry about the legality issue with this?

I'd love to use Spotify, but I'd rather not pay $10 a month for music (as cheap as that may seem).

Completely and totally worth it to me. I always said that when they create something that makes it easier to buy music than steal it I would use it. Well they did and I do.

I prefer going with the cluster-frick, rat's nest music storage approach and saving my music on various different external hard drives without rhyme or reason.

"Hmm...I wonder if that Steve Miller Band album is on this hard drive....nope, nope that's definitely the porn drive, let's try this one..."

A 1TB external hard drive should be less than $100. Get one of those. As for downloading, get a program called winrar. Its free and legal. You can find it on cnet. After that go to filestube or just google a band's name plus .rar. Make sure you're downloading .rar files.

re: music storage

I have a 1.5 TB hard drive that is about 3/4 full. I back it up with a 2TB hard drive and also use WD Live TV Media Server to stream to. It also has a 2TB hard drive if needed. All that and I subscribe to Spotify for $10 a month. well worth it.

I started amassing a more massive collection than just my own rips back about 2006. I started out with a 500 GB external. I've sent drives all over the U.S. and Canada swapping collections. As of today, I have over 1.1 terabytes of mp3s (220,000 plus songs), plus enough FLAC files to get it right at 2 TB.

I have spent an unholy amount of time organizing everything by genre and sub-genre. It's all laid out in a sensible way that lets you find exactly what you're looking for as long as you have a pretty good idea what type of music it is.
