Turkey is not really the Middle East. Near East is the better term. Hell, it was mostly considered part of Europe up until the Ottoman Empire was dismantled post WW1.

The one thing I took away from visiting Turkey is that it certainly isn't European. I think near East works for it. I saw why it's EU membership is highly contested.
