Zach Lowe Still Obsessing on Team Names, Ranks Pelicans #10

10. New Orleans Pelicans

I've been onboard since day one, and I almost can't believe a segment of fans thinks this is a stupid mascot. On a basic level, no other prominent sports team, college or pro, goes by this name. The local lineage is clear; the brown pelican became the region's preeminent symbol during the sadness of the Deepwater Horizon disaster in 2010, and a minor league baseball team in New Orleans used the name for several decades.

Also: Have you ever seen a pelican? It is a supremely cool bird, and it attacks its prey with a ruthless efficiency — and in very visually pleasing fashion, dive-bombing straight down into the water from hundreds of feet above.

The Pellies could push for a top-five spot once we see how the organization uses it — how the logo and uniforms evolve, what vernacular develops, and whether the team's in-arena mascot is as spectacular as it should be.

I'm sorry, but "Rockets" has always seemed like an awful name for a professional sports franchise to me.

+1 Ditto 'Wizards', 'Nets', 'Kings', 'Hawks'.
Ooooooohh. How scintillating!
They critcize Pelicans without even realizing that the Pelican is our state bird and is on our state flag. Not to mention that it is a predator and fighter.
And Lowe brought up a great point. NO OTHER team has the name 'Pelicans.'

There is one nickname in all of sports that defies logic and needs to be destroyed - Utah Jazz.

There's a correlation between Pelicans never being used before and people thinking it's a stupid name.

It's a whole lot better than being named after a currently popular movie like Mighty Ducks or Raptors.

Sure, there's a connection, but I still think it's a lame name.

The worst argument I keep hearing idiots on ESPN make, "how are you supposed to get jacked up before a game if your name is the Pelicans?"

Who in the frick ever gets jacked up before a game based around the team mascot?

Utah Jazz being in the top twenty is ridiculous. Completely inappropriate name. NBA is full of names that are either terrible (Wizards, Heat, Nuggets, Magic), or geographically inappropriate (LA Lakers, Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies).

Pelicans is definitely in the top half, and I think Rockets is as well. Bulls, Celtics, and Pistons are prob my favorites.

WTF? Wouldn't the easy answer here be it's the fricking state bird? shite blows my mind that I haven't read this anywhere when the choice of mascot is being discussed in the national media.

He thinks jazz itself is such a great name for basketball team. We would be #1 on this list if we were the new orleans jazz
