I just finished the last season and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It is a lot like Smallville in that it takes a different perspective on a tale we all know.

You see how Arthur, Merlin, Morgana, and other came to be and you can learn about other characters from this time you didn't see in Richard Gere's movie.

I really enjoyed it. Good chemistry between the cast, interesting story lines, and 5 seasons was about right. If you like Fantasy scifi shows you should give it a watch.

Yeah, they could have stretched it out and made it go further (although I know it had poor ratings in US) but 5 seasons was good enough. Plus you can watch it from start to finish now on netflix

Merlin and Arthur being the same age ruined it for me. Merlin is the guide, the voice of wisdom in Arthurian legend. Hard to accept that when he is the same age as the one he is guiding. Gandalf would have been far less compelling if he looked 20.

Them making Merlin Arthur's man servant may not be faithful to the legend, but it worked pretty well as a plot device. It gave Merlin enough access to save Arthur with magic regularly, but also enough exposure that he had to constantly cover his tracks to hide his identity. He also had to take being the butt of jokes and put down upon even though he was the most powerful person in the room most of the time. The show would have been entirely different if they were different ages.

I thought that was a good idea personally, I know it doesn't follow the legend but it showed how they developed a friendship and the faith in Arthur that Merlin had

I actually started to watch it but just didn't get far. Bf wasn't very into it...and he's the keeper of the netflix...but I wouldn't have minded watching some more. Kind of reminded me of Legend of the Seeker (was that the name of that show?)...cheesy, but still good.

Netflix has this on my recommendations list. I've been meaning to give it a chance. I'll add it to the ongoing list...

May take a few episodes, I'm intrigued by anything related to Merlin/Arthur times so I was into after like 3 episodes.
