IMO HOF caliber starting pitchers should have a shitload of wins.
This in general should be true, but there are exceptions. Pettitte (imo) isn't a HOF-caliber pitcher, and he has a shitload of wins because he was on an awesome team.

Things have changed a little now that pitchers come out earlier but I still think a pitcher blaming a loss on his team is a cop out unless his team scores less than 2 runs.
Which happens quite a bit in this era. A pitcher shouldn't be penalized for a lack of run support, and in some cases, a lack of bullpen support.

I never really thought of Joe Mauer as having a strong HOF case til now.

My favorite Mauer number:

Batting titles: 3

All other catchers in the last 137 seasons: 3

Meh. For the vast majority of baseball history pitchers, at least starters, were judged on ERA, Ks and how many wins and losses they had. I guess I am old school but I like traditional stats better than this new crap!

I agree with ERA and K's because those represent actual production, but a pitcher shouldn't be held accountable if his team can't score runs. It's like blaming the QB because his defense can't stop anyone. Nolan Ryan had a winning percentage of slightly above .500, but no one is making a case to keep him out of the HOF.

If Utley gets in as this article suggests, I feel Ortiz will too with maybe two more seasons of production (as long as he never gets caught up strongly in PED scandals).

Mauer is a top 5-7 catcher of all time and easily one of the 5 best players of the last 10 years

We should always do things like they have been done throughout history. Never improve

I really think that Yadier Molina will be a HOF guy.

Soriano is probably the best case for LF

Closing in on 400 home runs, 300 steals, 2000 hits, and a shot at 1200 RBI

Only 3 I believe have 400/300 Bonds, Arod, Dawson. And Soriano/Beltran on cusp of that crowd

Tim Hudson, no chance for the Hall? I believe 200 wins is going to be the "New 300" with the way starters are managed and bullpens are used.

I would hope that we could stop looking at such a worthless stat for Hall consideration.

Yeah, and they used to throw complete games. With so few pitchers going the distance these days, it's becoming more and more of an archaic statistic. At best, a pitcher used t have 50% responsibility for a win or loss, if you think defense has no impact. But now, with pitchers rarely going to distance, at BEST, they have about a 33% impact, which is how long they pitch for.

Wins don't matter for pitchers today because they aren't on the mound when the game is decided. Well, then there's the fact they can't score runs, but you get my meaning. I'd rather discard how wins are calculated, and look at a team's win-loss record in a pitcher's start regardless which pitcher gets assigned the win.
