I think Gilmore emerges as the 3rd DT in rotation. Also believe Chavis will use LaCoture and Herron in a 3 DL set for 3rd and long situations.

Simon was the nickle back in '11 and going into '12 had started ONLY three games.

LSU had NINE Fr (seven Tr - two RFr) in the defensive two deep/rotation last year.
Coming out of spring we had two RFr freshmen in the two deep. Not nearly as young and inexperienced as people think.

The only part of the team we are rebuilding is the DL. Do have a solid group of five players to start with though.

I'm particularly excited about this group that I think will play with a chip on their shoulders. Some of the linebackers we have brought in the last few years are crazy athletic, and our Dline and Dbs always speak for themselves. The schedule will force our guys to grow up fast and hopefully it benefits them in the long run.

Most people outside of LSU would perceive Simon as our best CB last yr and thats the OP's point.
It seems to me that we were mostly in a 4-2-5 in 2011 and Mathieu was the guy mostly freelancing or covering the slot. (nickel)
That leaves Simon locked up on the #2 WR in most big time situations. Either way, whether he started or not he played a ton. In fact, he was 3rd in the conference in pass breakups that year.

Simon went from 8 tackles his true freshman year to over 40 and 10 pass breakups in 2011. Arguably the best coverage CB on the team that year. Gave up only 3.6 yards per attempt for less than 200 yards and only 1 TD the whole season.

Every year a couple sophomores make a huge jump from their freshman seasons and a few freshman always step it up. Our defense has enough depth and talent this year for the same to happen. 7-8 players at DT, it's reasonable to think that half of them will be at least solid. The same for DE's and LB's.

Loston is starting for his second straight year and has more experience than ever before. Mills, Collins, Eugene, and Martin have played plenty and it's logical that they've progressed over the year. Eugene, Dwayne Thomas, and Holmes were putting up great coverage in the spring game. Against some quality receivers. Thompson and Sandolph also have another year under their belt. Same for Derrick Raymond. Not to mention White and Robinson who are able to play heavily as true freshman. Both are more advanced at this time than almost everyone of our cornerbacks in the past.

Scary. If we don't get a decent pass rush it's gonna be a long season.

Everyone says this but do you know what we're trying to replace? Let's look at the numbers and not the names. Between the 6 DL we lost, there was a total of 23.5 sacks in the 13 total games, which in a word, sucks-arse. When you narrow it down to even competition (7 SEC games) we had 14 total sacks. Again, that's between SIX total players, including our "superstars" Mingo and Montgomery. Between Freak, Ego, Rasco, Allen, Hunter, Bower, Beckwith, Gilmore, Mickey and Herron, I think we will be perfectly capable of putting up a similar pass rush and should exceed that pretty easily.

I am most excited about our linebackers, I think we got some guys in that rotation that will explode this year. The amount of athleticism is scary.

If the three starting are Barrow, Debo, and Kwon, the entire starting linebacking corps will be in the NFL one day.

As for the D Line we may be a little thin, but I think we will have enough support from linebackers
