I was just wondering about this and I think it would be pretty cool to upgrade a consoles GPU, processor, powersource etc.
don't flame on me, telling me to "buy a PC" because I'm not a fan of pc gaming due to the fact that I prefer a controller and using a controller on pc puts you at a disadvantage.

Meh, there's a ton of people on of that are using a controller for pc now. I'm not of of those because I'm a man but I wouldn't say that you're nearly at the disadvantage that you would have been just a couple of years ago.

Also, could you imagine how expensive a gpu for a console would be? Hell the same 7950 that I just bought for less than 300 is 500 for the Mac version. The price gouging would be marvelous.

ETA: I realize that's not the best comparison but I think you get my point. Also, console upgrade path would be very limited unless you could just replace everything and that kind of defeats the purpose of a console.

You would never need to buy a new console if you could just upgrade your old one. At the very least they would last longer. Doesn't sound like a good business move.

Well unless the upgrade able hardware was proprietary from MS/Sony and those were the only places that you could get it from you're correct.

Also, if they changing formats and started coding for another architecture which would make you have to change.

Haha good point but on the other hand we both did it when we built our pc's. oh and we're not 13 either and execute a reasonable level of common sense.

That would pretty much by definition make it no longer a console.

Not technically a console. Just a really small PC.

True but its going to be running a Linux kernel that's going to be built to only run steam big picture or whatever in the hell they're going to be calling it. So it going to be a small crippled PC or a console.

That's awesome. I wish I still had mine and my game gear. I almost bought a sega saturn last year but there really isn't anything to play on it.

I came in here to post exactly this. Having a console upgradable splits your customer base and then developers don't know what they should be developing for because they don't know what they can and can't assume.

Yes, developers could work around it somehow ("If game detects video ram upgrade, use higher res textures...") but that's one of the main pros of designing on a console.

And yes, the N64 had the expansion pack but only 2 games required it and one of those was a Zelda game. People will (or at least would) pay extra if it involves a new game in that series.

Not sure if that's a good idea. One of the main advantages of consoles is that you don't have to upgrade them at all. Once you have one, you're set for a good 8-10 years. Hell I still play my PS2 every now and then.
