How many people here are actually basing opinions on actual games they've watched?
I'd say almost no one based off the way the board's collective mind changes on prospects weekly, daily, even though most of these guys haven't played in months.
Most players people have actually watched a good bit of, because they played college ball in the US.
International players are much more difficult, and I try not to make too many judgments on them because I simply haven't seen them play.
A highlight video of anyone is a horrible barometer.

Most people seem relieved that Demps won't be tempted to take a guy there aren't enough highlights and stats of to form a proper opinion.
Not because of highlights, but reading some of the euro basketball "experts" stuff. I forget who the guy was(i can look it up), but he was high on Saric. Even he admitted though that Saric is a terrible shooter and defender. Maybe Saric comes in the league in a few years and turns into a successful 6'10" point forward but label me skeptical. I don't see mold-breaking talent there. I don't have anything against the guy, so im fine if he proves me wrong. But he looks like a taller Kendall Marshall to me.

Whether or not anyone has heard of him prior to a couple of weeks ago is irrelevant. You don't have to know who a prospect is prior to watch them play. There are game tapes out there if you can actually find them. If you're resourceful enough, it's not too hard to find.
They read that Dell was in Croatia looking at the guy so they convinced themselves to like the guy.
If reports started coming out that Dell was in love with Rudy Gobert we'd all figure out a way to like him because he might have eventually played for us.
In the same way that everybody came around to Rivers last year after it was obvious that Dell and Monty would take him if he was there. Rivers was not by any means universally liked before that.

There's some truth to that, for sure.
I vehemently disliked Rivers as a prospect and argued against it for a long time. When he was picked, I made the best of it and hoped he would pan out.
I remember having long arguments on HR about how much better Lillard would be than Rivers, and the usual suspects just trashed that.

My response had nothing to do with why people favor certain prospects and everything to do with your premise of having to be familiar with the player to scout andf watch them play. Like anything else, you can find resources like game tape to formulate an opinion.
