My over hanging issue with Breaking Bad (SPOILERS through season 4 episode 2)

I've been stuck in season 3 for awhile. Finally went ahead and watched the last two episodes of it. Cool way to end the season, I bet that cliff hanger drove ppl nuts having to wait 
Anyway, my issue is Walt. He's supposed to be this genius, yet he's so dumb ALL THE TIME. I mean he thought he could just walk up to Gus's house and shoot him in the face? C'mon..... And then he thinks he's gonna get Mike to betray Gus just by buying him a drink at a bar? I mean that's just ignorant thinking. The show is good, but that kind of stuff is ridiculous

You know nothing, keep watching.
But ya walt was in over his head just trying to stay alive at that point.

He's a chemistry genius and a ruthless drug kingpin. He's not a criminal mastermind or anything. It's not like he is planning something.
