Harvesting timber on 20 acres

We recently inherited about 20 acres in walker with good timber. We would like to do some kind of select cut but not sure where to start. Who are some reputable companies and any idea on what the timber might bring in the area? Land located near walker south road.

I know some people in the area who ship timber to china of all places. Make way more than sending it to Georgia pacific.
Eta: this is word of mouth. I hear they ship it there in sea cans. May not be any validity to it

Visit web sites of Louisiana Forestry Association and LA Office of forestry for lists of forestry consultants. If you do not have experience selling timber, you are better off with a consultant (they will tak 8 to 10 percent). 20 acres is pretty small to get a lot of interest from loggers if you plan to selectively harvest. I assume your property is mature loblolly...might get $1000 to $1500 per acre. Timber prices are at near record prices so timing is right.

Are prices really near record high? I don't follow prices but I was trying to sell some pine a little over a year ago and they were historically low. Bad timing I guess

Prices in Southeast lagging behind, but nationally pine sawtimber up 50% in past year. SE on upswing as well. Housing market rebound and China exports driving increase...expected to hit $450 per mbf by 2014.

Thanks for the advice. It is mature so I'll do a little more research. Do I really need a consultant? Or can I just get multiple quotes and have them compete against each other? What's the benefit of a consultant?

You don't need a consultant, but they know the local markets, buyers, logging crews, etc. and can usually get you a better bid outcome. Crafting the timber deeds requires some experience so your land is not left in a terrible condition.

Uh, no. what the mills pay us is down, they are 62% (down 38%)of what they were this time in 2010. oh and diesel is up 43%.
do not pay for a consultant, find a reputable timber company and they will do you right. Our foresters work with landowners and tell them that their timber is not ready, how to thin, etc. we don't want to cut their timber once, we want to cut it again.

I am in the same place as you but have around 100 acres of pines that needs to be thinned. This is the second cut on these pines.I hired a forester that goes for about 10% off my end. He estimates about 1 ton per acre but suggest we do a cut and pay because its too hard to determine. Extremely high volume of pines.
20k off Pine Pulp
10k Chip n Saw
--------------------
~ 30k
I have some bigger pines I may want to cut out also as logs but we didn't get that far.
