Look at Indiana, they added then 30 year old David West after their young core made the playoffs for the first time. I think that's a pretty good model. This team probably will need to add a savvy vet at some point, but adding a guy that will be 33 next season when the team is probably 2 seasons away from the playoffs is a waste of a savvy veteran, not to mention cap space that could be used to build your young core.

They can keep flipping everybody for drafts picks or you start a core (around a star.. Davis) and build on top of it.

Who, exactly, have we traded for picks so far?

I watched Boston and Miami build championship teams in one off season.

If you can't see how Miami and Boston are different than New Orleans with regards to basketball, no one here can help you

He is the head coach of an NBA team. It's not all on Monty but he hasn't helped himself at times this year.

You're missing something here. You can't just trade away young players for vets to say you have vets. You also can't throw money around until you're ready to get over the hump.

In one case,Boston, Danny Ainge was helped significantly by a friend(Kevin Mchale) and was able to get KG for a bucket of nails. In the other, Miami, they all wanted to be together. Pat Riley did nothing special, but be along for the ride and put on a pep rally.

I know, from interviews, that most star players were mentored by Vet players and that molded who they became (Magic-Kareem, Nash-Dirk, Barkley-Dr.J, Duncan-Robinson, I could go on and on).

Thank you, that's very cool of you to say. I know I'm not the most knowledgeable guy here. But I love the debate and I think it's fun thinking of different ways to build the team. I admit I reach on alot of the ideas, but it's more fun than sulking cause it's a bad/wasted year.

That roster gets you 45-50 wins and the playoffs. What then?

I think that would be awesome. We go from 25-30 wins to 45-50 wins, maybe knock out a higher seed in a grueling 6 game series. Davis gets a ton of press and national people are talking about how cool the new mascot is (or dumb, your pick).

They enter the post season with 30+ million to spend, plus a late 1st round pick. They have bird rights on Granger and Gasol. A great young core. I don't see how any of that is bad.

Demps will have to get busy, but it's better than keeping Vasquez, Anderson and Gordon to battle for playing time with Smart, Davis and Rivers, have a journeyman as your Center and pick up a 2nd-3rd tier SF like Chandler or Wright as your major FA pick-up. That team is pretty much the same team we had this year, except you hope guys get better because they are older/more experienced. But they won't get the minutes to get better. There is such a thing as being too deep (just look at the Kings).

Fair point, I had to look. Maybe it's a generational thing. But this is what I found..

"When LeBron James was a rookie, he preferred to learn by doing.

He kept in touch with several friends around the NBA who were veterans, but for the most part, he wanted to experience everything for himself. But not every young star feels that way, including the Seattle SuperSonics' budding franchise player, Kevin Durant, and James is happy to oblige.

After getting to know each other last summer when Durant trained with Team USA in Las Vegas, James and Durant have built a relationship and often the Cavaliers' star serves as a mentor.

''I was in the same position Kevin was coming into the league and trying to be the face of a franchise and try to lead the team to victory,'' James said. ''He's having his difficulties in his first year, just like I had my difficulties.''

Durant and James talk or text message each other every few days, discussing everything from the game to their personal lives to injuries. Durant recently had a sprained finger and James, who suffered the same injury last month, gave advice about how to treat it.

''He's been like a big brother to me,'' Durant said. ''I'm very fortunate to have a relationship with probably the best player in the world, and I'm going to take advantage of it.''

James is embracing the role. Not only has he grown into the captain of the Cavs, but he's also built a core of friends around the league who come to him for advice, even though he just celebrated his 23rd birthday last week.

''It's kind of funny because sometimes I'll be a mentor to guys who are older than me,'' James said. ''But I was in the league before them, so I kind of know the ins and outs. It's kind of cool.''

I just hate the thought of Davis being mentored by guys on other teams. It just doesn't seem right. But maybe that is how things are these days.

It seems like the Olympics really allowed Davis to form some of these relationships. I'm not too worried about it warping his sense of competition when it comes to playing against these guys.

Also, I think signing a guy like Roger Mason can serve in that role. Thats all i expected from him this season, but Masonry has ben thrust into . In terms of teaching him to be a pro. If we want someone to mentor his game. Let him go hang with "the dream" in Houston for a month, this summer.

Centers age better.

...but no, 27 or 28 is not too old. I would love Deng and a first for Gordon.

Demps probably has to look for more trades similar to proposed Gasol/Granger deals. There are no more assets other than cap space and expirings dont get the same return they used to. That is bad.

You could potentially lose 3 starters off a playoff team. That is bad.

You could potentially resign 3 guys on the wrong side of 30 to be key pieces around your 21 yo franchise player. That is bad.

I'm on board with getting a few more vets. They need some more experienced hands to steady the ship. I just don't know if two or three BIG moves like that make sense given Davis's youth and another top 5 pick coming this summer. And giving up on Anderson/Davis combo is just rash at this point. Their numbers have been much better post ASB.

I know everyone wants to win now, but this seems like going all in on that idea at the expense of the long term picture. To me, its a modified version of the Houston/CP3 trade.

Bingo...The mentor thing is overrated.

It's a luxury, but not worth making major trades for.

If you want a veteran mentor for Davis hire PJ Brown as an assistant.

I agree. We don't know quite where Davis is going, or who he will be. It's too early to definitively define his position/role.

Or do you keep tanking for the lottery and hope you get lucky every year?

I didn't say we can't trade Vasquez and Anderson for a veteran, but getting Gasol just doesn't work. He won't give us much production and he'll be gone after a year, then we're stuck having to possibly overpay for someone else in FA to replace him

I kind of really want Victor Oladipo...I'm finding it more difficult to hop on the Marcus Smart bandwagon.

...and I still like Shabazz more than Porter.

Hope the Pelicans draft Oladipo or Shabazz.

I'm worried about Shabazz. He seems to have strong Xavier potential. I don't know if his being out of shape at the start of this season was a function of his not being able to work out with the team or his own fault. He also had some ankle injuries coming into the season. But during this home stretch, he's just been underwhelming as a prospect. He's not going to be able to play bully ball with everyone in the NBA.

For me, I'm:

Porter/Smart
Shabazz
Oladipo/Len

Unless we trade Gordon, then I'd put McLemore at 1 with Porter/Smart
