Thoughts on Bryant McKinnie?

He was the Ravens back-up LT to Oher and played in all 4 of the Ravens playoff games and did well. He is a free agent right now. His salary was $3.5 mill last year. Now he's been in the league for 11 years, is 33, and has had some character issues in the past. But at 6'8 354, he may be someone we can plug in for a cap friendly short term deal. Assuming Lane Johnson won't fall to 15, and people have expressed thoughts about taking Chris Faulk despite his injury, others are out there, including Terron Armstead from Arkansas Pine-Bluff who ran the 4.71 in the combine. May allow us to draft someone, and give us a little time to develop them while McKinnie fills the void for a year or two. This is providing Charles Brown doesn't become the man. Thoughts?

seems like I've heard of this McKinnie cat before
I'd link a past thread about him but that's offensive to many here

Nah haha I wouldn't be offended. Just been real busy with school the last couple days, haven't been able to read through every thread. Plus the ones I did see him in I thought were just blips. No worries on my end.

Not sure about sombody thats been in the for league for 11 years and not starting coming here to protect Drew, we would be just as good with Brown imo.

Just feel like it can't hurt if its a deal that can be made under the cap to have someone that has at least been proven at LT in the past opposed to someone that has no NFL experience in the position. At the very least it would provide for competition, and would give us some depth considering we have none there.

Yeah i agree, as long as the price is right.

it's a trust the front office situation to me
Just cuz I haven't seen enough of Brown to think he's ready or feel comfortable with him at LT doesn't mean it ain't the right decision. I've pointed out since the possibility of Bushhog leaving arose that we saw a lot less of him before he was inserted as starter.
Hard to believe they wouldn't have another body in of some sort though- just for depth or competition. Marcel Jones might be the only other rostered player that could possibly go LT.

Yeah, I agree of course. This is just interesting to me because the we have obvious needs at LB, S, Dline, and LT and TE, so our draft strategy is almost entirely contingent on who we sign in FA leading up to it.

Still a good OT but old...I'd prefer younger OTs.

Oh dear
McKinnie is also on my cheap/value list. Along with Adam Jones and formaly Delmas.

Not defense; do not want.
Seriously, if the FO goes out and spends any kind of major money on an offensive FA...

His 3.5 mill salary last year isn't exactly major money, and yes Defense is important, but we need someone protecting Drew's blindside so the D has a lead to protect...

We do not need a $6-$10 million dollar vet OT with just a few years left.
OT is arguably overrated across the league, but most certainly here. Not the must-have position to be a successful team.
Especially for a team with a QB who has quick eyes, quick feet, & a quick release. Drew makes The Bushrods , Striefs, Jamal Browns look better than they really are.
Please stay focused on defense, Loomis.

I mean I'm aware that Drew's success comes off of his ability to shuffle in the pocket so in reality the guards are what is most essential to him, but in the OP I said short-term, so a few years left doesn't really matter.

I'd be fine with McKinnie if he doesn't want a lot of money. I honestly think we go after a tackle later in the draft. Pretty sure we got Nicks, Evans & Bushrod in the 4th round. I'd look for more of the same this year.

He was my first choice as a non bank breaker for a short term fill in. As each day goes by I see Brown more likely the plan as the next man up. I do think they'll bring a vet but more of a backup/swing tackle.
Besides Marcel Jones, I dunno if Bryce Harris (who was next up after Bushrod was injured at RT) can compete at LT at all.
After the 1st Rd there are some guys that could compete out of the gate- Long, Faulk, Armstead, Watson, etc.

There's a lot of quality guys in the third round. Although, like I've said before, I want Rambo in the 3rd.
Some possible 4th/5th round OTs:
Brennan Williams, North Carolina
David Quessenberry G/OT, San Jose State
Jordan Mills, Louisiana Tech
Luke Marquardt, Azusa Pacific
Xavier Nixon, Florida
Ricky Wagner, Wisconsin
Oday Aboushi, Virginia
