Pierre LeBrun ?@Real_ESPNLeBrun
Via news release, NHLPA says it has given consent to NHL on its proposed re-alignment, to be re-evaluated after the 2014-15 season

Pierre LeBrun ?@Real_ESPNLeBrun
And to be clear, NHLPA has consented to exactly the configuration proposed by NHL, so 16 teams in East, 14 in West, playoff wild-cards, etc

Pierre LeBrun ?@Real_ESPNLeBrun
Next step in the process is an ownership vote which should be held in short order I would think

Dave Molinari ?@MolinariPG
Penguins will be in an 8-team division with Philadelphia, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Columbus, Carolina and Washington next season.

so 16 teams in East, 14 in West

So playoffs are still 8 and 8?

Correct, the 3 division winners and 2 wild cards per conference.

That sounds rediculously stupid. What's the point of an uneven realignment?

Travel.

Detroit is going to the East solely because of travel distances. Makes much more sense for them to be in the East.

It also allows for expansion in the West such as Seattle or Kansas City.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Phoenix

Detroit
Florida
Montreal
Ottawa
Tampa Bay
Toronto

Top three teams in each division earn postseason berths. The remaining four spots go to wild cards, the top two records in each conference.

Good to see the Pens, Cryers, and Hated Rangers in the same division.

I'm kinda glad DET would go to the east (although I personally enjoyed the 10PM faceoffs out west more )..but cool for them to be in the same conference as TOR, MON, BOS, NYR so there is the original 6 factor. I agree the travel was a big part as well.

That shite is fun during the playoffs, but I always thought that back to back series against like Phoenix and San Jose was brutal on the team.

Shoulda found a way to kick Chicago over to the East. Then the Original Six are in the same conference and the Detroit-Chicago rivalry is preserved. Also should have named the divisions Patrick, Adams, Norris, and Smythe.

But overall, I can't complain. Better than the six-division format and way better than when the Penguins were in the Northeast.

Cool for the Red Wings, but sucks for the Hawks.

Yeah, I would've liked the Blackhawks to be in East too, but in general, I like the alignment for the most part.

I'm ok with the realignment but I don't like the playoff format. Playing your own division in the first two rounds blows

Hell yeah! Oilers made out like bandits.

More games against the Flames and Canucks, less games against Minnesota and Colorado. Only 7 teams in the division. Still can't win worth a damn but at least we only have to beat out 3 other teams.
