I always love the "well you can't do any better" argument/defense. No shite, I'm not a paid professional. I'm not suggesting LSU hire me, even though I do know infinitely more about the game than Hawthorne. And it isn't just the simple random mistakes that bother people. It is the simple random mistakes along with the routine completely botched calls, lack of knowledge, bitchiness, and the fact that he actually openly complains about having to sit there and do his job.

If Hawthorne is literally your only connection to organized baseball at all then I can see where there is no problem. But why is it such a stretch to believe someone would prefer a competent professional to call the games? It isn't like he is doing this for free.

I listen to a lot of games on weekends while working outside around the house and I too really enjoy listening to the games on the radio. I don't mind the screw-ups because eventually they get it right so what's the big deal? I like Charlie better than Jim and I like the fact that neither of them really display much verbal diarrhea. I really prefer not to have a chatty announcer. I'm comfortable with hearing only crowd noise when nothing is happening. I don't need to be entertained with a bunch of stupid tales or obscure facts no one really cares about.

This minus the yard work

Why don't you just not listen if you don't like it. Jim Hawthorne does fine but I am sure you could do a much better job juggling at least two sports at once nad traveling between cities to call first then the other.
There it is, just as sure as Nicky Red Devil eatin his Little Debbie's: The Sunshine Pumper grand excuse defense proclamation.
