I know that without Sabermetrics, a team can't keep up these days. However, at some point good ol' fashioned scouting and common sense should take over.

THIS GUY alleges that outfield alignment between CF and LF doesn't actually matter if the players are close in ability to track down a fly ball.

A few holes in his argument:

He NEVER mentions arm strength, as a CF needs the stronger arm of the two positions to reach home plate, especially since CF is usually the deepest part of the field.

Another thing is that he throws out groundballs, which is stupid being as a lot of groundballs get to the OF.

He also ignores the fact that some players are inherently better at judging the balls that are hit straight at them (i.e. CF) than they are at judging balls that slice or from a corner angle in LF. So even if the two are equal in all else, you need to see them play to make a decision rather than just look at the numbers.

He also ignores the toll that CF can take on a hitter's performance or body. Hamilton in CF or Bruce in CF could greatly affect their hitting performance and health than LF would IMO.

I think he is just showing that defense rarely seperates two teams. it's good hitting and pitching. So get the right guys on the field and it really doesn't matter too much between the best fielder and the worst fielder.

Then he's not doing it right, even Saber people have stats for arm strength.

Jacoby Ellsbury was routinely punished in UZR by being terrible at reading the ball off the bat.
