Using a hoop net

First of all I know some of y'all probably don't like those who use hoop nets and will most likely respond by saying,"Use a rod like everyone else!" However, I'm only going to use one net just to get enough fish to have a small fish fry every now and then, so no worries 
After getting that out of the way, I was wondering if y'all had any tips, do's and donts, and what kinds of spots/baits to use for catching catfish (any species).I'm gonna put it on a river, so that may help you with details.

ETA: do you have to have a license for only one net? And where is a good place to buy a net? A website or location in CENLA is good.

Put it where the water is moving and face the opening up river, catfish like moving water. It's always best to put a hoop net in a pinch point if you can. Best bait is stinky cheese and use a panty hose.

Ok, thanks. So should I weigh it down with weights and just have a jug tied to the net that marks the spot? Or place it shallower with a stake?

Stake on one end, anchor of some sort on the other. Put where the water moves. I use either soy or dog food as bait, works fine for me.

You can weight it on the down river side, but the upriver side needs to be staked. I never marked mine with jugs because I didn't want anybody checking it. I wouldn't put it in too shallow of water because again, someone will check it or steal it. Everybody on the water is looking for an easy box full of fish.
A pinch point is where one body of water is narrowed down to where if a fish is swimming, he has to swim into your net to go where he is traveling. Ex. Where a canal narrows down at a point into a nother canal.

Ok, thanks for the tips. Any recommendation on depth? And how do you retrieve the net if its not attach to a jug or float with a line?

Atleast 6 foot so it's not visible. I have a grapple hook on a rope to retrieve it. Throw the hook where the net is the pull it up to you in the boat.

So the depth doesn't matter with the fish as long as someone else doesn't see it to steal it?

Opening needs to face down river.
Yes you must have some current with the opening facingdown river. Catfish will smell the bait down river and swim upriver tward the bait into the opening

I recently tried some artificial crawfish bait too and it worked. Didn't last long, only a few days. I had a can of dog food in the bait tube too. I've also used those dog food size containers of catfish blood bait at wal mart. Just take a knife and stab a few holes in it.
