this was undoubtedly discussed in the game thread, but what was the deal with the umpire taking the ball from him. he then proceeded to rub the new ball on his wrist. someone please explain?

He probably had petroleum jelly on his wrist.

Couldn't go or watch the game. What was the deal with the whole rubbing thing?

He kept wiping the ball on his pants and then proceeded to try to grip the ball deep in a split finger grip. Every pitch he threw was from the split finger grip and it was take him about 5-10 seconds between every pitch just to wedge the ball between his fingers. The umpire took the ball away when he rubbed the ball on his pants while on the rubber.

Yeah he was just having trouble getting the grip on the ball. It was pretty strange.

He was just trying to get his split finger grip. He must have small hands because I've never seen someone have that much trouble.

Yeah when you throw a split finger you have to set it in your hand before you get the signs every time because it is easy to switch to other grips. If he didn't then the batters would know when the split was coming because he would be digging in his glove before he threw it.

Clemons used to talk about how he would always stretch out his fingers by throwing splits with softballs. His hands must be huge.

Not that it stuck out over most games, but everyone was rubbing their balls. Heck, it was a baseball game..

I threw a split finger and never had trouble getting the grip in my glove.
