Does anyone remember a basketball game at home in the mid 80's (IIRC) when we played Tennessee Martin and they had a stocky white guy who was like 5'5" named Zach?

He played so well against our big guys that our student section was going crazy cheering for him. At the end of the game, they students (again, IIRC) gave him a Tiger Rag towel and he jumped up on the press table and was waving the T-rag in a circle while the student section was going completely nuts, giving him a standing ovation, cheering him for his efforts in the game.

I may have some details wrong on this, but i would like to confirm that i am not nuts.

It was crazy. I have never seen us or any other team honor an opponent like that.

I believe that was Mike Hansen and he ended up transferring and playing at LSU in the late 80's/early 90's.

This is also odd for my first post, but it was January of 1984. Zack played for American International. Couldn't find the roster through Google.

It wasn't UT-Martin. It was US International in the 1983-1984 season. Midweek game after the SEC season had started. LSU named the score on them (want to say those poor jokers had played about 16 of their 20 or so games at the time on the road) and this guy scored near the end and the place went nuts.

The Reveille even had little ads afterwords for weeks that said something in effect "Even Zack ___ reads the Reveille."

It happened to Pete Maravich....

"Still, maybe his most legendary performance came in a double-overtime victory at Georgia during his junior year.

With Georgia trailing by eight and desperate to foul in the final minute of double overtime, Maravich unleashed a Globetrotter-esque dribbling exhibition to run out the clock. Then he astonished the Georgia crowd again by scoring his 57th and 58th points of the night just before the final buzzer, flipping up an audacious 35-foot hook shot that went in as time expired.

"It wasn't the game winner, but it might as well have been," White said. "Our fans came pouring out of the stands. They lifted him up on their shoulders. The cheerleaders were dancing around him. It was just a mad house. That was the kind of excitement he generated."

Remember, this was AT GEORGIA !!

If the Georgia game was Maravich's signature performance, his career high 69-point effort against Alabama wasn't far behind. The Tuscaloosa crowd erupted with every basket the home team scored and roared again each time Maravich answered with a bucket of his own."

The Alabama player who went up against Pete that night has a picture in his office of him guarding Pete with a caption on it that says " I held him to only 69 points."
