Saw Willie Nelson recently on TV. He was playing at a show and has same old guitar. The damned thing has a hole in it. Pardon me TWO holes. All guitars have holes. What brand of guitar is that. Spanish style and nylon stringed I know but what else? And why not fix the hole?

Also Robert Earl Keen fans. What is a "Dutch Stinged Guitar"? Lyric from Gringo Honeymoon says a guy is playing one.

It's a Martin Classical guitar. Thus no Pick-Guard.Classical Guitars are usually "Finger-Picked".It's his favorite guitar and he's played a hole in it.But it's a Martin so it still sounds great.

Looks like there are a few Sigs on it.

I wonder how long he has had that thing. And nobody has answered my second question.

In addition, Willie estimates that he has 100 signatures on his Martin including those of Leon Russell, Roger Miller, Kris Kristofferson, Gene Autry, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, lawyers, football coaches, and other friends and associates.

The crusty caballero in the Robert Earl tune is playing a "gut-string" guitar.
Basically they used to make guitar strings back in the day out of anything that could be stretched for tension, animal guts made a fine string when there were no elixirs to be found!

That guitar has got some truly jacked up string spacing. I wonder if Willie could even play a halfway normal guitar.

It is made of what is commonly known as "catgut"

quote:

For a long period, catgut was the most common material for the strings of harps, lutes, violins, and violas, as well as other stringed musical instruments, as well as older marching snare drums. Most musical instruments produced today use strings with cores made of other materials, generally steel or synthetic polymer. Gut strings are the natural choice for many classical and baroque string players,[citation needed] and catgut strings are still most commonly preferred in concert-tension pedal/grand and some lever harps because they give a richer, darker sound as well as withstanding high tension within low alto, tenor, and high-bass ranges.[citation needed]
Catgut suture was once a widely used material in surgical settings. There is debate about whether to continue using catgut in a medical setting, since cotton is usually cheaper and wounds closed with either cotton or synthetic threads are less prone to infection.[6] Catgut sutures continue to be used in developing countries where they are locally less expensive and easier to obtain.[citation needed] In addition, catgut is still used as a high-performance string in tennis racquets, although it had more popularity in the past and is being displaced by synthetic strings.

Really? It sounds like Dutch?

Makes more sense.

I am an old nurse but not nearly old enough to SEE "cat-gut" used. But have heard the term a million times so I know exactly what you're talking about.

I saw him in 1992 with that guitar, already with the hole in it, and it did sound good.

I saw him Sept. 2012 with the same guitar and it sounded like garbage, IMO.

I saw Willie with Rogr Miller on Austin City Limits years ago.....Roger was playing a Telecaster when Willie came out to join him, and gave it to Willie....I swear it sounded exactly like that old gut-string POS. I concluded thats the only sounds Willie knows how to make
