How to fill up my accounting resume the right way?

I'm just starting out in the accounting world, and I have zero experience, but do have a job. Other than getting my CPA, what can I do to fill out my resume? What programs should I be learning to use? What, other than experience, do employers look for? I'm asking on the Money Board because I know a lot accountants frequent it.

Meeting the experience requirement for the CPA will expose you to enough areas of accounjting thast you should get a feel for what you enjoy doing. Once you identify that, focus your energies in that direction as far as professional competency goes. Employers, and clients if you stick with public accounting, look for people who have good communication and people skills. You will be constantly "selling" the value of your work to clients and/or employers and these skills are critical for demonstrating your value.
